Risk of injury 

When working on steering hydraulics, e.g. when removing the pressure reduction screw, escaping steering oil under high pressure can cause serious eye injuries.

Risk of poisoning 

Caused by swallowing steering oil which may lead to symptoms of poisoning such as headaches, dizziness, stomach pains, vomiting, diarrhea, cramps and unconsciousness.

Safety instructions/precautions 

• Wear safety glasses.
• With the engine running, unscrew the pressure reduction screw on the steering gear no more than five turns.
• When removing the pressure reduction screw, there will still be some residual pressure in the steering oil even after an interval of approximately one hour.
• Do not pour steering oil into beverage bottles.

First aid measures 

Eye contact

• If steering oil gets into the eyes, rinse eyes immediately with generous amounts of clean water or eye rinse.

Ingestion

• Have the person affected drink plenty of water with the addition of activated charcoal and call a doctor.
