| Turbocharger task | To generate boost pressure at low engine speeds | ||
| Turbocharger function | Engine exhaust is routed from the exhaust manifold into the turbine housing (f) and across the turbine wheel (g). The energy supplies by the flow of exhaust gases (C) set the turbine wheel spinning. This drives the compressor wheel (d), which is coupled to the turbine wheel via the turbine shaft (n), at the same speed. Rotation can reach a maximum speed of 180,000 rpm in higher altitudes.
