• The engine speed is recorded by the crankshaft position sensor (L5).
• The signals from the crankshaft position sensor (L5) are read in by the engine control module and sent to the CAN/engine compartment as a message (in rpm).
• The instrument cluster (A1) receives this message and actuates the stepper motor of the tachometer (A1p5) depending on the speed.

Warning range 

The warning range  (marked red on the scale) starts as follows on vehicles with

• gasoline engines at 6200 rpm (depending on the type of engine fitted)
• diesel engines at 4600 rpm

Adaptation to the number of cylinders 

It is not necessary to adapt the tachometer (A1p5) to the number of cylinders of the engine.

If CAN values are implausible the tachometer (A1p5) pointer moves to the left end of the scale.

In addition a fault code is stored in the fault memory.
