Checking condition of transmission oil:
- The metering of the red paint pigment was clearly too low after the first tests. Since 10/97 higher pigment metering has been introduced for a stable red color. Pure brown or black discoloration has no effect on the coefficient of friction and the function of the ATF fluid and does not give cause for complaint.
- If the oil smells burnt, this indicates slipping brake or clutch discs. Once the cause (shortage of oil, blocked valves etc.) was found and eliminated, the appropriate components and the oil should be replaced.
- Abrasion in oil
Due to the relative movements between the individual transmission components, even after a short distance fine, cloudy abrasion (aluminum/grey, brass/yellow) can be found in the oil pan.
This abrasion does not impair the function of the transmission.
Although if very fine abrasion (graphite sludge which leaves behind gray streaks on paper) or larger swarf (in the mm range) is found on the bottom of the oil pan, the transmission has mechanical damage. Based on this type of complaint, the corresponding components or transmission must be replaced. In the event of repair, the transmission, oil cooler and lines should be flushed out and the ATF fluid replaced.
The torque converter should only be replaced when swarf has been found in the converter oil during bleeding.
