Setting the compass zone (declination) 

Examples 

To maintain the best possible route display, it may be necessary to change the compass zone en route. (For example, the vehicle passes through two compass zones when driving from Bonn to Berlin (see examples).

IMPORTANTEarth's magnetic field 

The compass uses the earth's magnetic field to determine the direction in which the vehicle is facing.

The magnetic poles (north/south) of the earth, however, are slightly different to the geographical north and south poles. The magnetic axle of the earth is tilted approximately 20 ° compared to the earth's rotational axis. If the earth's magnetic field is to be used to determine direction, therefore, various correction factors  must be taken into account for the different zones of the earth. This is done by calculating 15 different compass zones. The declination is approximately the same at each place within a zone.

If the correct compass zone is entered, the compass can compensate for the earth's magnetic field and therefore display the route with a relatively high degree of precision (± 10°).
