MODIFICATION NOTES

10.9.03 Reference to adjusting toe on front axle replaced by reference to chassis alignment check Step 37  
REMOVING Removing     
DANGER Risk of fatal injury  if the vehicle slips or topples off the lifting platform Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  to skin or eyes from hydraulic fluid spraying out under pressure. Risk of poisoning  from swallowing hydraulic fluid. Depressurize the hydraulic system completely before starting any work on the system. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. AS00.00-Z-0013-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  with trapped or crushed  fingers when removing and installing or aligning hoods, doors, trunk lid/tailgate and sliding roof. When moving components ensure that no body parts or limbs are in the area of movement. AS00.00-Z-0011-01A
NOTES Notes on self-locking bolts and nuts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
1 On vehicles with adjustable steering column, fully extend it    
2 Open engine hood IMPORTANT Model 129: Unlock the hood from inside the car, pull handle out of radiator grille and open the hood.

10.1 Detach exhaust shielding plates in area of steering Model 208 with engines 112, 113 AR46.20-P-0500-07A
11.1 Detach left front cross strut Model 208.4  
12 Detach return line (30f) and high-pressure expansion hose (30i) IMPORTANT Seal off line connections with plugs.  
    SPECIAL TOOL Set of plugs
IMPORTANT Model 208 with engines 112, 113: Attach box wrench bit with extension to high-pressure expansion hose (30i) from the front.

13 Remove ignition key and engage steering lock, or remove electronic ignition key IMPORTANT Model 129 as of 02/93, model 202 with fanfare horns and airbag clock spring contact (A45): Keep the ignition key away from the vehicle.
NOTES On vehicles with fanfare horns and airbag clock spring contact (A45) the steering wheel must not be turned with the steering gear removed otherwise the clock spring contact will be destroyed.
 
14 Detach steering shaft (80a) from steering coupling (25)    
15.1 Detach ground strap from longitudinal frame member Model 170  
16.1 Unscrew hexagon bolts of engine mounts Model 170 with engine 112 AR22.10-P-1100SV
    Model 170 with engine 111 AR22.10-P-1260HA
17.1 Raise engine approx. 40 mm and push towards the right Model 170  
18 Unscrew stretch bolts (23a) and carefully guide steering gear (23) out of steering shaft (80a) NOTES Do not use force otherwise the lower steering shaft will be damaged in vehicles with rigid steering column.

INSTALLING Installing     
19 Turn steering gear to center position Model 129 AR46.20-P-0500-01A
    Models 170, 202, 208 AR46.20-P-0500-01B 
20 Insert steering gear, guiding the steering coupling (25) into the steering shaft (80a) NOTES Do not use force otherwise the lower steering shaft (corrugated tube) will be damaged. Ensure that the parts are joined properly.  
21 Attach steering gear to longitudinal frame member IMPORTANTInstallation  : Replace stretch bolts (23a).
IMPORTANT On vehicles with adjustable steering column, push lower steering shaft into steering coupling.

22.1 Lower engine and install engine mounts Model 170 with engine 112 AR22.10-P-1100SV

23.1 Attach ground strap to longitudinal frame member Model 170  
24 Screw in bolt (25a) on steering coupling IMPORTANTInstallation  : Replace bolt.

25 Attach high-pressure expansion hose (30i) IMPORTANTInstallation  : Model 208 with engines 112, 113: Attach box wrench bit with extension to high-pressure expansion hose (30i) from the front.
