Detaching and attaching lower steering shaft - AR46.10-P-0500-01E

  1. Screw in the countersunk screw (32c) to protect the splines.
  2. Slide the lower steering shaft (80a) onto the upper steering shaft (70g) and install bolt and nut (80h).
  3. Mount suitable thrust piece (037) or tube (037a) to protect the lower steering shaft (collapsible tubing).
  4. Using a press or upright drill, slide the lower steering shaft (80a) onto the upper steering shaft (70g) until the disc spring (70e) is fully preloaded. Check the jacket tube for ease of movement by turning it at the same time (arrow).
  5. Tighten nut and bolt (80h) in this position.

NOTES

If the preload is too high,  the upper steering shaft can only be turned very unevenly or it sticks. The ball bearings are pressed into the bearing shells excessively.

If the preload is too low,  play is detectable at the steering wheel when the jacket tube is installed.
