REMOVING Removing     
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
DANGER Risk of accident  caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury  caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

DANGER Risk of injury  to skin or eyes caused by hydraulic fluid spraying out under high pressure. Risk of poisoning  caused by swallowing hydraulic fluid. Depressurize the hydraulic system completely before starting any work on the system. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. AS00.00-Z-0013-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by fingers being pinched or crushed  when removing, installing or aligning hoods, doors, trunk lids, tailgates or sliding roof. Keep body parts and limbs well clear of moving parts. AS00.00-Z-0011-01A

1 Open engine hood   AR88.40-P-1000F
2.1 Extract fluid out of the power steering pump's fluid reservoir Vehicles without level control

3 Remove ignition key and engage steering lock NOTES The steering wheel must not be turned when the steering coupling is detached, otherwise the fanfare horns and airbag clock spring contact (A45) will be destroyed.  
4 Raise vehicle    
5 Remove the front wheels    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary   AP40.10-P-4050Z
6.1 Remove engine compartment paneling Vehicles with gasoline engines AR61.20-P-1105AB
6.2 Remove bottom section of soundproofing Vehicles with diesel engines AR94.30-P-5300AB
7 Press tie rods (10) off steering knuckles   AR46.40-P-0200-02C
8.1 Detach heat shield from steering cup seals Model 210.08/28  
9 Remove high-pressure expansion hose (30i) and return line (30f) IMPORTANT Seal off line connections with plugs.

10.1 Disconnect return line from steering gear by unfastening the clamp Vehicles with level control  
11.1 Detach shield from steering coupling (25) Engine 112, 119 AR46.10-P-0400-01B
12 Carefully detach steering coupling (25) from control valve of rack-and-pinion steering (predetermined fracture point on control valve) NOTES Do not use force (hammer blows, a lot of leverage), if necessary expand clamping groove slightly using a screwdriver.  
13.1 Unplug electrical connector (2) from SPS solenoid valve (Y10) Vehicles with speed-sensitive power steering, code 213a  
14 Remove bolts (23g).    
15 Remove bolts (23a) and remove rack-and-pinion steering (23) with retaining plate (1g)    
IMPORTANT Evaluating steering rack when repairing accident vehicles   AH46.20-P-9409-01A 
16 Check rubber mounts of rack-and-pinion steering mounting for damage and replace if necessary    
INSTALLING Install     
17 Install rack-and-pinion steering with retaining plate (1g) and fasten onto front axle carrier (1) with bolts (23a, 23g) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace self-locking nuts.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Rack-and-pinion steering *BA46.20-P-1007-01A 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Retaining plate *BA46.20-P-1008-01A 
18 Turn rack-and-pinion steering (23) to center position and fit steering coupling (25) NOTES Do not use force (hammer blows, a lot of leverage), if necessary expand clamping groove slightly using a screwdriver. AR46.20-P-0600-01A
19 Fasten steering coupling (25) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace self-locking nuts.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1001-01B 
    IMPORTANT Engines 112, 119: ↓  
    Attach steering coupling heat shield. AR46.10-P-0400-01B
20 Attach return line (30f) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace sealing rings.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.20-P-1003-01A 
21 Attach high-pressure expansion hose (30i) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace sealing rings.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.20-P-1003-01A 
22.1 Attach return line to steering gear Vehicles with level control  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.20-P-1002-01A 
23 Attach tie rods (10) to steering knuckles TORQUE SPECIFICATIONInstallation:  Replace self-locking nuts.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.40-P-1002-01A 
REFER TO COMPONENT MODIFICATIONS Surface protection of bolted connection for tie rod to steering knuckle modified Model 210 as of 18.5.98 BT46.40-P-0001-01A
24 Install front wheels    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary   AP40.10-P-4050Z
25 Lower vehicle    
26 Fill power steering pump and bleed   AR46.30-P-0010B 
27.1 Plug electrical connector (2) into SPS solenoid valve (Y10) Vehicles with speed-sensitive power steering, code 213a  
28 Check steering for function and leaks IMPORTANT There is a grease cushion under the cover cap. A slight escape of grease is to be regarded as normal and should not be confused with leakage.  
29.1 Check front axle toe and adjust if necessary IMPORTANT When installing new parts.
