Removal (E300, S320, S350, S420 & S500)

  1. Remove drive shaft. See DRIVE SHAFT. On S500, go to next step. On E300, S320, S350 and S420, measure amount of starting torque required to turn pinion flange using torque wrench. Record torque for reassembly reference. When measuring rotating torque, ensure axle shafts are nearly horizontal and brakes are not dragging.
  2. On all models, position differential pinion flange Holding Wrench (129 589 01 07 00), and remove 12-point pinion flange collar nut. Using a puller, remove pinion flange. Remove thrust washer and oil slinger.
  3. Using a screwdriver, remove seal from housing. DO NOT damage splines. Check seal running surface on pinion flange shank. Replace pinion flange if seal running surface is worn or grooved. On S500, remove "O" ring from pinion flange.
