Checking toe-out on turns |
The steering geometry is checked by measuring the toe-out on turns. This is the difference in the steer angle between the outside wheel and the inside wheel when the inside wheel is steered through 20°. If substantial deviations are found, the cause may be one of the following, assuming that the camber and caster settings are correct:
- Toe-in not adjusted in the straight-ahead a position of the steering gear, resulting in unequal length tie rods.
- Steering knuckle arm, pitman arm or steering a idler arm.
- On vehicle involved in accidents too large a deviations in the front end (frame longitudinal member, frame cross member, wheelhouse liner, firewall and on the front axle carrier) which have an unfavorable effect on the adjustment range for camber and caster, resulting in large differences in toe-out on turns between the left and right
