The central locking can only be actuated from outside using the radio frequency or infrared remote central locking. Unlocking and locking the vehicle with the mechanical key has no influence on the central locking.

When unlocking a distinction can be made between "global" and "selective" unlocking.

• Global: unlock all locking positions of the vehicle
• Selective: Only unlock the driver's door and fuel tank flap

The central locking can be operated from outside with the mechanical key.

Actuation of the pneumatic system equipment 

The radio signal is conveyed from the antenna to the overhead control panel control module (N70). From there the electronic ignition switch control module (N73) is actuated via CAN data buses.

The infrared signal is conveyed from the IR receivers (A26/1, A26/2) to the respective door control module (N69/1, N69/2). From there the electronic ignition switch control module (N73) is actuated via CAN data buses.

If the electronic ignition switch control module (N73) recognizes a valid radio frequency or IR signal the corresponding control signals are transmitted to the PSE control module (combined) (A37) via CAN data buses.

Special functions of central locking 

• Emergency unlocking 

  A crash sensor is integrated in the pneumatic system equipment which unlocks the vehicle if there is a deceleration of 6g about all vehicle axes.

  The sensor is active only when the vehicle is unlocked from outside.

• Automatic locking 

  The vehicle is locked automatically from a speed > 15 km/h provided that this function is activated.

• Re-locking 

  To prevent unwanted unlocking by remote control, the vehicle is relocked automatically if a door is not opened within 40 seconds, if a key is not inserted in the ignition/starter switch or the interior switch (CL) is not operated.

  

Function of trunk lid CL (models 202/210 sedan, model 208) 

The remote trunk release switch (S15/1) is located in the trunk lid lock. If the vehicle is unlocked via the central locking and the pushbutton on the trunk lid lock is pressed, a ground signal is conveyed from the remote trunk release switch (S15/1) to the PSE control module (combined) (A37). The pneumatic system equipment conveys pressure, actuates the pneumatic actuator of the remote trunk release and opens the trunk lid.

If the vehicle is locked via remote control, the switch signal is also received by the PSE control module (combined) (A37), but this recognizes the vehicle as locked and does not actuate the pneumatic actuator of the remote trunk release.
