INSPECT Inspect
Test drive vehicle when received and determine actual condition
Raise the vehicle on lifting platform IMPORTANT Wheels freely suspended.
Detach engine compartment paneling at the bottom in the area of the steering IMPORTANT Vehicles with diesel engine only. AR61.20-P-1105AB
Turn rack-and-pinion steering to center position IMPORTANT The marking on the cap (3) must align with the marking on the timing case (arrows).
Pull rubber plug out of the adjusting screw (6) of the play compensation
Mark adjusting screw (6) relative to the timing case
Open left bellows at clamp and push to side
Attach bracket and dial indicator above the adjusting screw (6) on the steering gear and adjust to zero point SPECIAL TOOL Bracket Fig 2
SPECIAL TOOL Dial gage Fig 3
IMPORTANT The zero position of the dial indicator should not be changed any more during the measurement.
Start the measurement of the play in the center position of the rack-and-pinion steering and repeat at 8 further points in steering wheel position 90°, 180°, 270° and 360° counterclockwise and clockwise SPECIAL TOOL To rotate, push the socket wrench bit on the steering shaft splines. Figure
IMPORTANT The play is determined by rotating the rack from stop to stop. The force input should be approx. 1.1 Nm at the stop. The maximum value minus the minimum value produces the play (z. B. +10- (-1) = 11, the play is 11/100 mm).
Remove holder with dial gauge from steering gear
Adjust the play at the narrowest point to 4 to 5/100 mm in the center position of the rack-and-pinion steering IMPORTANT The play is reduced by turning the adjusting screw (6). (1 mm on the circumference of the adjusting screw corresponds to approx. 1/100mm reduction in play).
Repeat steps 8 and 9
Attach left bellows
Press rubber plug into the adjusting screw (6) IMPORTANT Check rubber plug for damage and replace of the play compensation if necessary.
Install lower engine compartment paneling. IMPORTANT Vehicles with diesel engine only. AR61.20-P-1105AB
Conduct a road test IMPORTANT Test drives should be carried out under approximately the same conditions. This applies particularly with regard to the speeds driven at.
