Detaching and attaching lower steering shaft - AR46.10-P-0500-01D

Steering shaft

Removal 

1. Unscrew nut (96). Remove tab washer (96a).

   Attaching 

2. Install new tab washer (96a) on lower steering shaft (80a).
3. First attach one thread of nut (96) to upper steering shaft.
4. Attach lower steering shaft (80a) to nut (96) and turn both parts and screw together by turning both parts until just before they lock in position in the splines.

5. Position upper steering shaft horizontal (reset cam for combination switch is on the left - arrow). Fix upper steering shaft in this position using the steering lock.

Lower steering shaft with joint fork and collapsible tubing (5-, 6- and 8-cylinder engines) 

1. 6.1 Rotate lower steering shaft (80a) until the joint fork points downwards as illustrated or the flats on the bolt-on flange are upright.

   

   The double flat section for the steering coupling is now horizontal and the groove for the fixing bolt of the steering coupling is on the right-hand side.

   Lower steering shaft with light-alloy sliding tube (4-cylinder engines) 

2. 6.2 Turn lower steering shaft (80a) until the groove (80i) for the fixing bolt of the steering coupling is horizontal on the right-hand side and the reset cam for the combination switch points to the left (arrow).

   The following is to be observed for the separate light-alloy steering shaft:

   • The position of the inner slide (80l) relative to the outer slide (80k) is determined by
   • an offset tooth and therefore the parts must not be assembled using force. It must be possible to slide the inner slide (80l) easily in the longitudinal direction.

3. The lower steering shaft is located relative to the upper steering shaft via the splines by screwing the nut (96) on further.
4. Tighten nut (96).

   

   To tighten the nut (96), mount steering wheel on the steering shaft and steady.
