Removal & Installation (E300, E320 & E420)

  1. Raise and support vehicle. On E320 convertible, when removing left axle shaft, remove cross brace from under vehicle. On all vehicles, when removing left axle shaft, disengage rubber rings for exhaust. Support exhaust system or remove exhaust system components as necessary.
  2. On vehicles with Acceleration Slip Regulation (ASR), when removing right axle shaft, disconnect ASR wiring harness bracket from rear axle carrier. On all vehicles, using a 30-mm 12-point socket, remove rear axle shaft collar nut. Remove axle shaft flange to differential bolts.
  3. Support inner axle shaft. DO NOT allow axle shaft to hang against outer CV joint. Using a press, remove axle shaft from hub flange. Remove axle shaft from vehicle. To install, reverse removal procedure. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
