Pinion Flange & Seal: Installation

Coat inner lip of new seal with gear oil. Using proper seal installer, install seal into differential housing. See SEAL INSTALLER table. If proper seal installer is not used, pinion seal may be installed into differential housing too far, resulting in a possible leak or seal failure.
Install pinion flange. Tighten NEW pinion flange collar nut to at least 133 ft. lbs. (180 N.m) while trying to attain rotating torque of pinion flange which was measured before removal. On all models, DO NOT overtighten pinion flange collar nut.
After reaching proper rotating torque of pinion flange, stake pinion flange collar nut. Apply sealant around pinion flange collar nut. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.

Install NEW thrust washer (collapsible). Coat inner lip of new seal with gear oil. Using proper seal installer, install seal into differential housing. See SEAL INSTALLER table. On S500, install NEW "O" ring onto pinion flange. On all models, install pinion flange. On E300, S320, S350 and S420, tighten NEW pinion flange collar nut to at least 133 ft. lbs. (180 N.m) while trying to attain rotating torque of pinion flange which was measured before removal.
On S500, tighten NEW pinion flange collar nut to 89-133 ft. lbs. (120-180 N.m). On all models, DO NOT overtighten pinion flange collar nut, or a new thrust washer will have to be installed on pinion.
On E300, S320, S350 and S420, after reaching proper rotating torque of pinion flange, stake pinion flange collar nut. On S500, stake pinion flange collar nut. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
