REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Remove engine cover or air filter IMPORTANT Unclip covering on front side of engine.
IMPORTANT Remove engine trim panel or air filter by lifting vertically up and off the cylinder head covers.

4 Remove poly-V belt (3) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Lock tensioning device with a drift or pin (diameter 5 mm).

5 Remove cylinder head covers (6) Air filter mounted on vehicle AR01.20-P-5014B

6 Remove spark plugs IMPORTANT One spark plug only at each cylinder.

7 Remove compressor Model 230.474, 203.065 /265, 170.466, 211.076 /276, 215.374, 220.074 /174 AR09.50-P-4705SVK
8 Position crankshaft at a 40° crank angle after ignition TDC of cylinder 1 NOTES The engine must not be turned back, otherwise the timing chain could skip.
IMPORTANT Rotate engine at crankshaft in the direction of rotation up to the 40° marking on the belt pulley/the vibration damper is aligned with the marking on the timing case cover.
Grooves on the camshafts must be pointing toward the inner V.
If no valve timing index marks on the camshaft are present, use the locating plate to set the valve timing.

11 Remove camshaft sprockets (10) IMPORTANT Lock right and left camshaft with locating plates.

    Inspect engine timing.

    Set basic position of camshafts. AR05.20-P-6020AU 
12 Remove camshaft bearing bridges (9) Engine 112, 113 without cylinder shutoff AR05.20-P-7103AU

13 Rotate piston for cylinder to be worked on to TDC NOTES Crank engine at crankshaft and hold up the timing chain so that it does not jam.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Before installing camshaft sprockets, again turn back the crankshaft in the starting position to a 40° crank angle after ignition TDC at the first cylinder.
 
14 Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving. IMPORTANT Engage reverse gear or park pawl with automatic transmission. If necessary, install the retaining lock (13) for the crankshaft, see: ↓  
    Remove/install retaining lock for crankshaft/ ring gear AR03.30-P-5000B
15 Connect cylinder leakage tester (12) IMPORTANT Turn connection hose (23) of cylinder leakage testing unit (12) into the relevant spark plug bore.

16 Pressurize compression chamber IMPORTANT Set a pressure of approx. 5 bar.  
17 Screw in retaining fork and detent with hinged bearing into the cylinder head SPECIAL TOOL Figure
18 Attach detent depresser with lever handle and thrust piece into detent with hinged bearing, align IMPORTANT Position thrust piece vertically at the upper valve spring retainer (16) and align parallel to the grid with the joint bearing.

19 Remove upper valve spring retainer (16) and valve spring (17) NOTES Do not allow valves to come into contact with piston crowns, otherwise they will be bent.
IMPORTANT Compress valve spring (17) and remove split valve spring retainer locks (15) with tweezers (20) or magnetic finger. The valve springs of the intake and exhaust valves are identical.

21 Remove lower valve spring retainer (19)    
INSPECT Checking     
22 Inspect surface of valve stems for roughness and ridging IMPORTANT Visual inspection or with nail probe.
Replace valves with a rough stem surface or formation of ridging: ↓
 
    Remove valves. AR05.30-P-3511AV 
23 Check upper valve spring retainer (16) and lower valve spring retainer 19) IMPORTANT Inspect the valve spring retainer for burrs, replace if necessary.  
24 Install in the reverse order
