Removal (C220, C230, C280, E320 & E420)

  1. Remove drive shaft. See DRIVE SHAFT. Using torque wrench, measure amount of starting torque required to turn pinion flange. Record torque for reassembly reference. When measuring rotating torque, ensure rear axle shafts are nearly horizontal and brakes are not dragging.
  2. Position differential pinion flange Holding Wrench (129 589 01 07 00), and remove 12-point pinion flange collar nut. Using a puller, remove pinion flange. Using a screwdriver, remove seal from housing. DO NOT damage splines. Check seal running surface on pinion flange shank. Replace pinion flange if seal running surface is worn or grooved.
