Removal and installation of the instrument panel - ra68001400100x(0100)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 42 other vehicles, including the 1999 Mercedes-Benz S600, 1999 Mercedes-Benz S500, 1999 Mercedes-Benz S420, 1999 Mercedes-Benz S320, and 1999 Mercedes-Benz CL600. Model 140 

Preliminary work:

Negative terminal on battery disconnected, steering wheel removed (46-610), instrument cluster removed (54-250), combination switch removed (54-310), molding at side of windshield removed (Remove and install the reveal molding at the side of the windshield  ), cover for loudspeaker on left and right removed (Removal and installation of the loudspeaker cover  ), glove compartment removed (Removal and installation of the glove compartment  ), cover below instrument panel removed (68-150) , cover on gearshift lever removed (Removal and installation of gear shift lever cover (manual transmission)  or Removal and installation of selector lever cover (automatic transmission)  ), radio removed (82-505), cover on center console removed (Removal and installation of the center console cover  ), spectacles compartment removed (Removal and installation of the spectacles compartment  ), side air nozzle removed (Removal and installation of the side air nozzle  ), center air nozzle removed (Removal and installation of the center air nozzle  )

Air ducts on left and right remove.
Plug on rotary light switch disconnect.
Plug connection on switch for headlamp range control disconnect.
Lamp socket for light switch symbol disconnect.
Sheet metal clamp on front wall pillar, left and right remove (2 each).
Actuation for steering wheel adjustment remove.
Control cable on release handle for parking brake unhook, remove handle.
Wooden trim strip below center air nozzle remove, for this purpose unclip cover on front, screw out screw and remove wooden trim strip.
Knurled switch strip remove (2 screws) disconnect electrical connection and actuating elements.
Screw (1) at connection point between center console and instrument panel screw out (2 each).
Screw (2) in cutout for instrument cluster screw out (1 each).
Screws (3 and 4) for fastening instrument panel screw out (4 each).
Instrument panel (5) remove, for this purpose lift instrument panel over air connections and center console. Then pull instrument panel back at right, guide jacket tube and ignition lock through.
Instrument panel (5) remove and store at side.

Removal and installation 

  1. Remove air duct (1). Screw out screw (2) and remove clip (3).

  2. Disconnect plugs for rotary light switch, headlamp range control and bulb socket for rotary light switch symbol (arrows).

  3. Remove actuating mechanism for steering wheel adjustment, for this purpose pull off knob, screw out screw (4), slide cover (5) up and remove.

  4. Screw out screw (6) and remove housing (7). Do not  unhook control cable.

  5. Remove control cable (8) for parking brake on release handle and remove handle (9).

  6. Unclip cover on wooden trim strip at side (arrows).

  7. Screw out screw (arrow).

  8. Remove wooden trim strip (10), for this purpose extend attachment hook in area of instrument cluster.

  9. Screw out screws (11 and 12).
  10. Remove knurled switch strip (13), and disconnect plugs and control cables for heater.

  11. Remove air duct (14) and clip (15).

  12. Screw out screws (arrows) (8 mm) at top of center console.

  13. Screw out screws (arrows) for mounting instrument panel (10 mm).

  14. Lift instrument panel over center console (arrows) and air connections at top, then pull back on passenger side and move out at steering column and ignition lock.

  15. Unclip electrical wires on instrument panel, driver's side (arrow).
  16. Remove instrument panel.

    Installation note 

    Adjust support points so that top is even with tinting on windshield and coincides with wooden trim strip on door cover.

  17. First insert instrument panel on the front wall pillar on the driver's side moving over steering column, ignition lock, air connections at top and mounting flange on center console.

  18. Align or expose insulating mats (16 and 17), electrical wires and control cables.

  19. Screw in mounting screws (7 each, arrows) and tighten.
  20. Plug in connectors for rotary light switch, headlamp range control and bulb socket for rotary light switch symbol.

  21. Install air ducts on left and right.
  22. Install clip on front wall pillar.
  23. Install knurled switch strip. Attach control cables for heater and plugs (arrows).
  24. Install wooden trim strip.

  25. Continue to reinstall in opposite order.
  26. Perform function check.
