The segment on the camshaft adjuster (g) generates an alternating voltage (induction) in the camshaft position sensor when the engine is running.

The higher the engine speed = the higher the voltage

As a result of the position of the segment a voltage pulse is produced, in each case at ignition TDC of cylinder 1.

This contactless signal generation requires a defined clearance between the housing of the camshaft position sensor (L5/1) and the camshaft adjustment segment. The clearance can be set with shims of different thickness.
