Remove/install rear axle shaft - AR35.30-P-0620A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
1 Remove exhaust system as of flange connection If necessary, when removing the left or right rear axle shaft  
    Model 129 with engine 104, 119, 120 AR49.10-P-7280FA
    Model 140 with engine 104, 119, 120

2 Remove exhaust system from pipe connection Model 140 with engine 606 AR49.10-P-7281H
3 Remove pipe routing rail Model 129 with ABS [antilock brake system]/ASR [acceleration slip regulation] up to 05/95, when removing the right rear axle shaft (37).  
4 Detach control rod at level control or level sensor Model 129 with ADS  
5 Detach cover of fuel pump assembly Vehicles with gasoline engine, except model 203  
6 Detach twelve-point nut on rear axle (37) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace twelve-point collar nut. AR35.30-P-0115-01A 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA35.30-P-1001-01A 
7 Remove rear wheel    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary   AP40.10-P-4050Z
8 Press rear axle shaft (37) out of the rear axle shaft flange NOTES Do not damage rotor for rpm sensor and boot on the rear axle shaft (37).
If the rear axle shaft (37) is difficult to remove:
↓
Press rear axle shaft (37) out of the rear axle shaft flange:

REFER TO COMPONENT MODIFICATIONS Rear axle shafts with forged centers (without core hole) Model 129, 140, 202, 210 as of 02/96 BT35.30-P-0005-01A 
9 Detach rear axle shaft (37) from connecting flange NOTES In order to prevent wheel bearing damage, the vehicle must not be moved on the wheels when the rear axle shaft (37) is removed.
IMPORTANT Move rear axle (37) shaft to approximately horizontal position, push together and remove diagonally downwards from connecting flange.
IMPORTANT Ensure that when loosening the bolts the tool insert is properly inserted in the polygon head or hexagon socket profile. Clean the polygon head profile or hexagon socket profile if necessary.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace self-locking polygon head bolts, hexagon socket bolts or torx bolts and washers.
Oil thread and bolt head contact surface lightly.		  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA35.30-P-1002-01A 
REFER TO COMPONENT MODIFICATIONS Rear axle shaft diameter increased Model 129 with acceleration slip regulation (ASR) code 471 BT35.30-P-0002-01A
REFER TO COMPONENT MODIFICATIONS Rear axle shaft and connecting flange centered Model 129 BT35.30-P-0004-01A
INSPECT Checking     
10 Check constant velocity joints, boots and end cover for leaks and damage IMPORTANT If outer constant velocity joint is defective: ↓
Replace entire rear axle shaft.
IMPORTANT If the inner constant velocity joint is defective, the boots are damaged or leaking or the end cover is damaged, replace the appropriate parts: ↓
Remove the inner constant velocity joint or boots on the rear axle shaft (37).		  
    Models 129, 140, 170, 202, 208, 209, 210, models 203.006/016/206/706/216
Model 203.004 /204 with taxi version code 450		 AR35.30-P-0660A 
11 Install in the reverse order
