Test condition Throttle control correctly set.
Engine Run up to operating temperature.
Vacuum line Detach, connect vacuum tester 201 589 13 21 00 and test vacuum at idle.
Specified value  : 385 ± 25 mbar
Engine Switch off and move throttle linkage to full-load stop. Test vacuum.
Specified value 0 mbar. If the specified values are not reached:
  1. Test vacuum control valve setting.
  2. Test vacuum lines according to vacuum diagram (see Repair Instructions, Engine, Combustion)

Test vacuum pump (43-660), replace vacuum control valve if necessary.

Hexagon bolts (2) Slacken; open throttle fully so that control lever of injection pump rests against full-load stop.
Vacuum control valve (65) Rotate in direction of arrow until resistance is felt. Tighten hexagon bolts (2) in this position.
NOTE: Since July 1994, a modified vacuum control valve has been installed on which the driver is spring loaded axially.

A cup seal (4) is installed with the modified vacuum control valve which prevents dust and dirt entering the vacuum control valve.

The air cleaner and housing for routing the air must be removed on vehicles with engine 603.96 for checking and adjusting (for vacuum line diagrams, see Repair Instructions, Engine, Combustion).
