detach, remount on floorpan, replace self-locking bolts, 120 Nm (Position 4).Rear muffler remove from mount, reconnect (Position 5). High-pressure lines (S1 and P4) use an open box-end pipe wrench 116 589 00 17 00 to detach, reconnect at
pressure accumulator (4).
S1 = 14 Nm.
P4 = 30 Nm.Self-locking hexagon nuts unscrew, replace, install, 10 Nm. Special tool
NOTE: If either of the pressure accumulators is defective, replace both units on the axle.Removal, installation
- Remove cover of spare wheel in luggage compartment.
- Remove spare wheel.
- Raise vehicle.
Left-hand accumulator only
- Unscrew self-locking bolt (69b) and remove cross strut (69).
Installation notes
Replace self-locking bolt (69b), 120 Nm.
- Detach the rear muffler from its mount, suspend with a hook to prevent it from falling.
Both accumulators
- Disconnect pressure line (S1 and P4) at accumulator (4).
Installation note
Tightening torques:
S1 = 14 Nm
P4 = 30 Nm
- Unscrew three self-locking nuts (4f) and remove accumulator (4).
Installation notes
Replace self-locking hexagon nuts, 10 Nm.
Disposal information
Always observe all applicable safety precautions when disposing of used pressure accumulators. To release the gas pressure, carefully drill into the arched side with a 3 mm bit until gas starts to emerge. Always wear safety glasses and gloves for protection against metal chips and emerging gas. Apply only minimal pressure while drilling, and do not allow the bit to penetrate any further into the bore hole (arrow) than absolutely necessary.
- Install in reverse sequence.

Exhaust system remove, install at the mountings on the vehicle floor and secure with a hook. (Position 1). Pressure lines (S1, P4) disconnect, connect, using a line wrench 116 589 00 17 00. Ensure correct routing.
M10X1 = 14 Nm.
M16X1.5 = 30 Nm.Self-locking hexagon nut (4f) unscrew, replace, install, 10 Nm. Accumulator (4) note information on scrapping. (Position 4). Special tool
NOTE: If either of the pressure accumulators is defective, replace both units on the axle.Removal, installation
Left pressure accumulator only
- Remove the exhaust pipe from its mountings on the floorpan, securing with a hook to prevent it from falling.
Both accumulators
- Use line wrench to disconnect pressure lines (S1 and P4) at accumulator (4).
- Seal pressure lines and connections on accumulator with suitable plugs.
Installation note
Tightening torques:
M10X1 = 14 Nm.
M16X1.5 =30 Nm.
Right-hand rear accumulator
Left-hand rear accumulator
Unscrew three self-locking (4f) and remove accumulator (4).
Installation note
Replace self-locking hexagon nuts, 10 Nm.
Notes on scrapping
The relevant safety provisions are to be observed when scrapping accumulators.
In order to eliminate the basic pressure in the accumulator drill carefully on the convex side with a 3 mm drill bit until the gas flows out. To prevent accidents caused by the outliving gas and to protect against drilling chips, safety glasses and gloves must be worn. Apply minimal pressure, and do not allow the bit to penetrate any further into the bore hole (arrow) than absolutely necessary.
- 5 Install in reverse sequence.
- Remove the exhaust pipe from its mountings on the floorpan, securing with a hook to prevent it from falling.
