Notes regarding engine coolant - AH20.00-U-2080-01Z

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 42 other vehicles, including the 1999 Mercedes-Benz S600, 1999 Mercedes-Benz S500, 1999 Mercedes-Benz S420, 1999 Mercedes-Benz S320, and 1999 Mercedes-Benz CL600. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Corrosion protection/antifreeze must provide the following:

Coolant loss is prevented at high coolant temperatures.

Checking coolant in service

Before the start of the cold season, check the coolant for antifreeze protection.

In countries with high ambient temperatures, check corrosion protection/antifreeze concentration in coolant once a year.

The corrosion protection in the coolant diminishes during operation. The coolant then has a corrosive effect.

IMPORTANT The coolant should be used for a maximum of 3 years.

Before filling in new coolant, flush the old coolant from the cooling system.

Concentration

Approx. 50 % by volume of antifreeze must be added to water This concentration provides antifreeze protection down to approx. -37°C.

A higher concentration is only practical with even lower ambient temperatures.

55 % by volume of corrosion protection/antifreeze agent provides antifreeze protection down to approx. -45 °C.

IMPORTANT Exceeding 55 % by volume of corrosion protection/antifreeze agent reduces the antifreeze protection as well as the heat dissipating ability of the coolant.

Water

Use water that is clean and not too hard. Frequently, however not always, drinking water meets the requirements. The content of solubles in the water can be of importance for the forming of corrosion. If in doubt, have the water analyzed.

Disposal of coolant

IMPORTANT Old coolant must be disposed of according to local laws or waste water/environmental regulations.
