Wheel Carrier: Removal

- Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel. Apply parking brake. Using a 30-mm 12-point socket, loosen rear axle shaft collar nut. Using a press, remove rear axle shaft out of rear axle shaft flange.
- Remove parking brake intermediate lever and disengage cable control. Remove brake caliper and wire aside. DO NOT stretch or bind brake hose. On vehicles with Acceleration Slip Regulation (ASR), disconnect wiring harness for brake lining wear indicator.
- On all models, remove brake rotor. Remove parking brake shoes. Remove parking brake cable from wheel carrier. Remove brake shield bolts. Turn brake shield so rear suspension struts are more accessible.
- Remove camber strut-to-wheel carrier bolt. Remove shaped washer and flat washer. Force strut clamping sleeve from wheel carrier. Remove torque strut-to-wheel carrier bolt and nut. Using a puller, remove torque strut from wheel carrier.
- Remove tie rod from vehicle. See TIE ROD under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove thrust arm-to-wheel carrier bolt with shaped washer. Turn thrust arm on rear axle carrier downward. Force clamping sleeve from wheel carrier. Remove lower suspension arm-to-wheel carrier bolt and nut. Disconnect wheel carrier from axle shaft. Remove wheel carrier from vehicle. See Figure.
WARNING:
During wheel carrier installation, when lifting wheel carrier until rear axle shaft is horizontal, ensure vehicle does not lift off of hoist. Add additional weight to trunk as necessary.
