Removal (500SL)

- Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
- Pull off control knobs for blower fan and air distribution switches. Unscrew 2 large retaining nuts from knob recesses. Remove ash tray. Unscrew ash tray housing retaining screws. Remove ash tray housing from center console.
- Remove center console A/C-heater face plate by pulling outward and downward. Disconnect wiring connections from rear of face plate. Unscrew 2 horizontal bolts inside opening between A/C-heater control wheels.
- Push air distribution switch toward right side of plate to remove. Push fan blower switch upward to remove from plate. Pull retaining plate outward enough to unclip temperature selector wheels.
- Remove retaining plate from center console. Reference mark vacuum lines to fan blower switch. Remove wiring connector and vacuum lines from fan blower switch. Remove switch. Remove radio and retaining bracket.
- Locate and unscrew SRS control unit mounting bolts using Torx TX30 bit. See Figure . Remove instrument cluster to access SRS wiring harness hold-down clips. Remove hold-down clips. Locate and unplug SRS control unit wiring connector. Remove SRS control unit through opening in center console.
