Retrieving Fault Codes: Impulse Tester (124-589-19-21-00)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1993 Mercedes-Benz 500SEL and 1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Locate diagnostic connector. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC CONNECTOR LOCATION  table. See Figure -4. Using Impulse Tester (124-589-19-21-00), connect tester probe leads to diagnostic connector terminals No. 1 and 6.
  2. Ensure all SRS electrical connections are connected and secure. Battery voltage must be greater than 11 volts. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Display "U-BATT" should appear on impulse tester display. This display indicates impulse tester is working and voltage supply for impulse tester is okay.
  3. Press START button on impulse tester for exactly 3 seconds. Note and record fault code readout on tester display. If START button on impulse tester is pressed for longer than 6 seconds, fault code to be displayed will be erased.
  4. Press START button on impulse tester for exactly 3 seconds to read and record second fault code. Repeat sequence of reading and recording until first fault code repeats. See appropriate SRS FAULT CODES  table. Turn ignition off. Remove tester.
