Front Wheel Bearings

NOTE: Rear wheel bearings are nonadjustable.
  1. Remove caliper, and wire aside. Remove grease cap and contact spring for radio shielding from hub. Loosen bushing clamp hex head pinch bolt. Tighten clamping nut, while simultaneously turning hub, until hub will turn only with an effort.
  2. Loosen clamping nut about 1/3 turn. Relieve tension by striking stub axle with a plastic hammer. Install dial indicator on front hub. Adjust dial indicator with a preload of .08" (2 mm).
  3. Check hub end play by pulling and pushing on hub flange. Turn wheel several times before each of several measurements. During measurement, wheel hub must not turn. Tighten hex head pinch bolt on hub clamp and recheck end play.
    CAUTION: Always use a dial indicator to ensure wheel bearings are properly adjusted.
  4. Wheel bearing axial play is .0004-.0008" (.01-.02 mm). Axial play is correct when washer between outer tapered roller bearing and clamping nut will barely turn under finger pressure. Reassemble front hub and brake unit. Ensure front hub is filled with high temperature bearing grease.
