Instrument Cluster: Removal
- Before proceeding, follow air bag precautions and disable SRS. See AIR BAG PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAGS article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT section.
- Remove steering wheel air bag module by using Torx TX30 bit with long shank to remove 2 Torx screws from rear of steering wheel. Lift air bag module enough to unplug connector from rear of module. Place module away from work area, with pad facing upward.
- Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Remove steering wheel hub bolt. Reference mark steering wheel-to-shaft position. Pull steering wheel off with hands, or if necessary, use proper steering wheel puller to remove steering wheel. When removing steering wheel, use extreme care not to break carbon contacts mounted to top of steering column.
- To remove instrument cluster on 190E and 300 Series, push top of instrument panel hood up slightly and slide in Removal Hook (126-589-03-33-00). Move hook over to right side of cluster (3 o'clock position) and turn special removal hook handle 90 degrees to engage hook in recesses in rear of cluster. Pull hook handle to pull cluster out slightly. Unplug wiring connectors and speedometer cable. Remove instrument cluster.
- To remove instrument cluster on 350 Series, 420SEL and 560 Series, insert 2 Removal Hooks (126-589-03-33-00), with hooks facing down, between instrument panel and sides of instrument cluster. See Fig 1
. Turn special removal hook handles 90 degrees. Carefully pull both hook handles outward to engage hooks in recesses in rear of cluster.
- Continue pulling on hook handles to remove cluster while angling hooks outward about 120 degrees to prevent hooks from slipping out of recesses. See Fig 1
. Unplug wiring connectors, and remove instrument cluster.
