Removal & Installation: Removal

- Disconnect negative battery cable. Cover damping mat with a piece of sheet metal to prevent damage to compartment firewall when lowering transmission.
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove engine splash shield. Support engine and transmission. Remove transmission mount nut from rear transmission cover. Remove transmission crossmember. See Fig 1.
- Disconnect exhaust bracket from transmission, paying attention to location of washer. Remove shield plate above drive shaft intermediate bearing. Loosen drive shaft nut. Loosen bolts from drive shaft intermediate bearing, but DO NOT remove bolts.
- Disconnect drive shaft from transmission so that companion plate stays on drive shaft. Using a 3/8 (10 mm) diameter mandrel, loosen fitted sleeves on transmission universal joint flange.
- Pull Drive shaft toward rear axle as far as possible. Hang drive shaft out of way. Disconnect exhaust pipe at rear suspension. Carefully lower pipe and hang pipe out of way.
- Disconnect speedometer cable from transmission and remove clip from holder. Disconnect clutch slave cylinder line. Remove clips and disconnect shift rods. Remove starter.
- Remove transmission attaching bolts, removing the 3 upper bolts last. Pull transmission out until it clears dowel pins, turn transmission 45° to the left and continue to pull transmission rearward until shaft clears clutch. Lower transmission.
NOTE: On vehicles with auxiliary heater, make sure that heater hose is not damaged when transmission is lowered.
