1986 Manual Transmission Removal - 190D & 190E: Removal

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Ensure insulating mat is covered for protection when lowering transmission. Support transmission with vehicle jack or pit lift.
  2. Remove rear engine mount. Remove engine carrier on frame floor. Remove exhaust holder on transmission. Remove shielding above drive shaft middle bearing.
  3. Loosen but DO NOT  remove clamping nut of drive shaft. Loosen bolts for drive shaft middle bearing. Remove drive shaft middle bearing. Remove drive shaft on transmission. Ensure companion plate remains on drive shaft.
  4. Loosen fitted sleeves on universal flange. Push companion plate away from universal flange. Use a cylindrical mandrel of approximately .390" (10.0 mm) in diameter and 5.910" (150.0 mm) in length.
  5. In order to lower transmission to required height, disconnect exhaust unit on rear suspension. Lower transmission carefully and suspend with wire. Remove tachometer drive cable from rear of transmission. Remove holder for line on clutch housing.
  6. remove clutch slave cylinder from housing. Move cylinder with hydraulic line to rear until push rod is free of clutch housing. Remove clip locks and shift rods from intermediate shift levers on shift bracket.
  7. Remove starter motor. remove bellhousing bolts (remove upper 2 bolts last). Rotate transmission 45 degrees left and pull transmission out of pilot bearing. Lower rear of transmission. Remove transmission. Remove clutch pressure plate and disc.
NOTE: Tilt transmission to rear only after pulling input shaft well out of clutch plate. Damage to clutch disc will occur if shaft is not clear.
