Intention of troubleshooting procedure

P0171-00 (PCM (PYUL)) DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

Step Inspection Results Action
1 PURPOSE: VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION RELATED TO LACK OF FUEL AFFECTS DIAGNOSTIC RESULTS 
  • Verify the remaining amount of fuel.
  • Is there a lack of fuel?
Yes Refill the fuel and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Go to the next step.
2 PURPOSE: INSPECT FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to [FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ] in Service Information).
3 PURPOSE: VERIFY HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to [HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ] in Service Information).
4 PURPOSE: VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION RELATED TO FUEL LEAK FROM FUEL SYSTEM OR RESTRICTION AFFECTS DIAGNOSTIC RESULTS 
  • Inspect the fuel system pipes (low to high pressure sides) for fuel leakage and restriction.
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Go to the next step.
5 PURPOSE: VERIFY FUEL PUMP CONTROL MODULE FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to [FUEL PUMP CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ] in Service Information).
6 PURPOSE: VERIFY FUEL PUMP UNIT FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to [FUEL PUMP UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ] in Service Information).
7 PURPOSE: VERIFY FUEL INJECTOR FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to [FUEL INJECTOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ] in Service Information).
8 PURPOSE: VERIFY PURGE SOLENOID VALVE FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to [PURGE SOLENOID VALVE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ] in Service Information).
9 PURPOSE: VERIFY PCV VALVE FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to [POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION (PCV) VALVE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ] in Service Information).
10 PURPOSE: VERIFY MAF SENSOR FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to [MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) SENSOR/INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE (IAT) SENSOR NO. 1 REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ] in Service Information).
11 PURPOSE: VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION RELATED TO AIR CLEANER ELEMENT AFFECTS MEASUREMENT OF INTAKE AIR AMOUNT  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to [AIR CLEANER ELEMENT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ] in Service Information).
12 PURPOSE: VERIFY MAP SENSOR FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to [MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE (MAP) SENSOR/INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE (IAT) SENSOR NO. 2 REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ] in Service Information).
13 PURPOSE: VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION RELATED TO INTAKE AIR SYSTEM AFFECTS DIAGNOSTIC RESULTS 
  • Visually inspect for loose, cracked or damaged hoses on intake air system.
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Go to the next step.
14 PURPOSE: VERIFY ELECTRIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING DRIVER FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to [ELECTRIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING MOTOR/DRIVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ] in Service Information).
15 PURPOSE: VERIFY ELECTRIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING MOTOR FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to [ELECTRIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING MOTOR/DRIVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ] in Service Information).
16 PURPOSE: VERIFY ELECTRIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to [ELECTRIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ] in Service Information).
17 PURPOSE: VERIFY OIL CONTROL VALVE (OCV) FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to [HYDRAULIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ] in Service Information).
18 PURPOSE: VERIFY A/F SENSOR FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to [AIR FUEL RATIO (A/F) SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ] in Service Information).
19 PURPOSE: VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION RELATED TO EXHAUST SYSTEM AFFECTS HO2S SIGNAL 
  • Verify the exhaust gas leakage from the exhaust system. (between A/F sensor and HO2S)
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Go to the next step.
Repair completion verification 1 PURPOSE: VERIFY THAT VEHICLE IS REPAIRED 
  • Install/connect the part removed/disconnected during the troubleshooting procedure.
  • Clear the DTC recorded in the memory. (See CLEARING DTC )
  • Replicate the vehicle conditions at the time the DTC was detected using the following procedure.
  • Perform the DTC inspection for the PCM. (See DTC INSPECTION )
  • Is the same Pending DTC present?
Yes Refer to the controller area network (CAN) malfunction diagnosis flow to inspect for a CAN communication error.
(See MALFUNCTION DIAGNOSIS FLOW [CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK (CAN)] )
If the CAN communication is normal, perform the diagnosis from Step 1.
No DTC troubleshooting completed.
