Diagnostic Procedure

FUEL ODOR (IN ENGINE COMPARTMENT) (VIN Y) DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

Step Inspection Results Action
1 INSPECT FOR MISSING OR LOOSE FUEL FILLER CAP 
  • Visually inspect if the fuel filler cap is missing or loose.
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No U.S.A. and CANADA: 
  • Go to the next step.
2 INSPECT EVAPORATIVE HOSE CONNECTION 
  • Inspect the evaporative hose between the fuel tank, pressure control valve, charcoal canister main, purge solenoid valve, check valve (intake manifold side), and the intake manifold. (Refer to EMISSION SYSTEM LOCATION INDEX (VIN Y) .)
  • Is there disconnection in the evaporative hose or damage?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Go to step 4.
3 INSPECT EVAPORATIVE HOSE CONNECTION 
  • Inspect the evaporative hose between the fuel tank, charcoal canister, purge solenoid valve, check valve (intake manifold side), and the intake manifold. (Refer to EMISSION SYSTEM LOCATION INDEX (VIN Y) .)
  • Is there disconnection in the evaporative hose or damage?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Go to the next step.
4 VERIFY FUEL LEAKAGE FOR MALFUNCTION 
  • Visually inspect the fuel system pipes.
  • Is there any leakage?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Go to the next step.
5 INSPECT CHECK VALVE (INTAKE MANIFOLD SIDE) 
  • Inspect the airflow of check valve (intake manifold side). (Refer to CHECK VALVE INSPECTION (VIN Y) .)
  • Is the check valve (intake manifold side) airflow properly?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
6 INSPECT PURGE CONTROL SYSTEM OPERATION  Yes U.S.A. and CANADA: 
  • Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
7 INSPECT CHARCOAL CANISTER (MAIN)  Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to CHARCOAL CANISTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN Y) .)
No Go to the next step.
8 INSPECT CHARCOAL CANISTER (SUB)  Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to CHARCOAL CANISTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN Y) .)
No Remove the fuel injector and visually inspect fuel injector or leakage.
(Refer to FUEL INJECTOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN Y) .)
9 VERIFY CHARCOAL CANISTER FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to CHARCOAL CANISTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN Y) .)
No Remove the fuel injector and visually inspect fuel injector or leakage.
(Refer to FUEL INJECTOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN Y) .)
Repair completion verification 1 VERIFY THAT VEHICLE IS REPAIRED 
  • Install/connect the part removed/disconnected during the troubleshooting procedure.
  • Has the malfunction symptom been eliminated?
Yes Complete the symptom troubleshooting. (Explain contents of repair to customer)
No Refer to the controller area network (CAN) malfunction diagnosis flow to inspect for a CAN communication error.
(See MALFUNCTION DIAGNOSIS FLOW [CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK (CAN)] .)
  • If the CAN communication is normal, perform the diagnosis from Step 1.
    • If the malfunction recurs, go to the next step.
Repair completion verification 2 VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION IS CAUSED BY NOT PERFORMING PCM REPROGRAMMING 
  • Verify repair information and verify that there is a new calibration in the PCM.
  • Is there a new calibration in the PCM?
Yes Perform the PCM reprogramming and verify if the malfunction symptom was corrected.
No Replace the PCM.
