Diagnostic Procedure

EXHAUST SMOKE (VIN Y) DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

Step Inspection Results Action
1 VERIFY EXHAUST COLOR 
  • What color is smoke coming from the exhaust system?
Blue Burning oil is indicated.
  • Go to the next step.
White Water in combustion is indicated.
  • Go to Step 5.
Black Rich fuel mixture is indicated.
  • Go to Step 6.
2 VERIFY PCV VALVE FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION (PCV) VALVE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN Y) .)
3 VISUALLY INSPECT DYNAMIC PRESSURE TURBO 
  • Remove the parts necessary to inspect the turbocharger without removing the turbocharger. (Refer to DYNAMIC PRESSURE TURBO REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN Y) .)
  • Visually inspect for the dynamic pressure turbo compressor housing.
  • Is any engine oil found inside dynamic pressure turbo compressor housing?
Yes Install all removed parts in this step.
Excessive amount of oil is found: 
Small amount of oil is found: 
  • Wipe the oil out of the vehicle, then go to the next step.
No Dynamic pressure turbo is normal.
  • Install all removed parts in this step, then go to the next step.
4 INSPECT ENGINE INTERNAL PARTS 
  • Inspect for the following engine internal parts:
    • Damaged valve guide, stems or valve seals
    • Blocked oil drain passage in cylinder head
    • Piston ring is not seated, seized or worn
    • Damage cylinder bore
    • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Engine internal parts are normal.
  • If other driveability symptoms are present:
5 VERIFY SEALING OF ENGINE UNIT  Yes Inspect the following:
  • Cylinder head gasket leakage
  • Intake manifold gasket leakage
  • Cracked or porous engine block

    If there is any malfunction:

  • Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.

    If there is no malfunction:

  • If other driveability symptoms are present:
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
6 VERIFY CURRENT INPUT SIGNAL STATUS 
WARNING:
  • Observe legal speed limits when driving the vehicle and perform the procedure in a location where safety can be assured.
  • To prevent an accident, work with two people when the vehicle is being driven (one person drives vehicle, other person operates MMDS).
  • Access the following PIDs using the M-MDS:

    PCM: 

    • APP1
    • APP2
    • ECT
    • ECT_VOLT
    • ECT2
    • ECT2_VOLT
    • IAT
    • MAF
    • MAP
    • MAP_VOLT
    • TP_RELAT
    • A/F_SEN_CUR
    • HO2S_OUT_VOLT
    • BOOST_AIR_TEMP_VOLT
    • BOOST_AIR_TEMP
    • BOOST_PRES_ACT_VOLT
    • BOOST_PRES_ACT
    • SHRT_FUEL_TRIM
    • LONG_FUEL_TRIM
  • Monitor the PIDs under the black smoke appeared engine condition.
  • Do the PIDs indicate normal according to engine conditions? (See PID/DATA MONITOR TABLE [PCM (VIN Y)] .)
Yes Go to the next step.
No APP1, APP2 PIDs are not as specified: 
ECT, ECT_VOLT PIDs are not as specified: 
ECT2, ECT2_VOLT PIDs are not as specified: 
IAT PID is not as specified: 
MAF PID is not as specified: 
MAP, MAP_VOLT PIDs are not as specified: 
TP_RELAT PIDs are not as specified: 
6   No A/F_SEN_CUR, SHRT_FUEL_TRIM, LONG_FUEL_TRIM PIDs are not as specified: 
HO2S_OUT_VOLT PID is not as specified: 
BOOST_AIR_TEMP_VOLT, BOOST_AIR_TEMP PIDs are not as specified: 
BOOST_PRES_ACT_VOLT, BOOST_PRES_ACT PIDs are not as specified: 
7 INSPECT FUEL INJECTOR OPERATION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
8 VERIFY INTAKE AIR SYSTEM FOR MALFUNCTION 
  • Inspect the following for intake-air system:
    • Air cleaner restriction
    • Intake-air system is collapsed or restricted
    • Leakage at engine intake manifold
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Go to the next step.
9 VERIFY EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR LEAKAGE 
  • Visually inspect for exhaust gas leakage from exhaust manifold.
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Go to the next step.
10 INSPECT FUEL PRESSURE (HIGH-SIDE) 
  • Start the engine and warm it up completely.
  • Access the PCM PID [FUEL_PRES] using the M-MDS at idle.
  • Is the PID value within specification?

    Specification: 

  • Approx. 10 MPa {102 kgf/cm 2 , 1450 psi}
Yes Go to Step 14.
No Lower than specification: 
Higher than specification: 
  • Go to the next step.
11 DETERMINE IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS HIGH FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR OR HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP 
  • Is the vehicle acceleration performance normal?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Go to Step 13.
12 VERIFY HIGH FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to Step 14.
No Replace the fuel distributor and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to FUEL INJECTOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN Y) .)
13 INSPECT WIRING HARNESS (INCLUDING CONNECTOR/TERMINAL) BETWEEN PCM AND SPILL VALVE CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE (HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP) FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Replace the high pressure fuel pump and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP INSPECTION (VIN Y) .)
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
14 INSPECT FUEL PRESSURE (LOW-SIDE) 
  • Connect the fuel pressure gauge between fuel pump and high pressure fuel pump.
  • Measure the low side fuel pressure. (Refer to FUEL LINE PRESSURE INSPECTION (VIN Y) .)
  • Is the low side fuel pressure within specification?

    Specification: 

  • 545-695 kPa {5.56-7.08 kgf/cm 2 , 79.1-100.0 psi}
Yes Go to the next step.
No Inspect the following:
  • Fuel line restriction
  • Fuel filter clogged
    • If there is any malfunction:
      • Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
    • If there is no malfunction:
15 INSPECT IGNITION SYSTEM OPERATION 
NOTE:
  • Because the malfunction may have been resolved by removing the carbon adhered to the spark plug during the spark inspection for the spark plug, verify that the repairs have been completed.
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
16 INSPECT ENGINE COMPRESSION  Yes Injector driver malfunction.
No Inspect for the following engine internal parts:
  • Cylinder
  • Piston ring
  • Improper intake valve timing
  • Improper exhaust valve timing
  • Such as cylinder head gasket
    • If there is any malfunction:
      • Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
Repair completion verification 1 VERIFY THAT VEHICLE IS REPAIRED 
  • Install/connect the part removed/disconnected during the troubleshooting procedure.
  • Has the malfunction symptom been eliminated?
Yes Complete the symptom troubleshooting.
(Explain contents of repair to customer)
No Refer to the controller area network (CAN) malfunction diagnosis flow to inspect for a CAN communication error.
(See MALFUNCTION DIAGNOSIS FLOW [CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK (CAN)] .)
  • If the CAN communication is normal, perform the diagnosis from Step 1.
    • If the malfunction recurs, go to the next step.
Repair completion verification 2 VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION IS CAUSED BY NOT PERFORMING PCM REPROGRAMMING 
  • Verify repair information and verify that there is a new calibration in the PCM.
  • Is there a new calibration in the PCM?
Yes Perform the PCM reprogramming and verify if the malfunction symptom was corrected.
No Replace the PCM.
