Automatic Transaxle Removal/Installation [FW6AX-El]: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. If the transaxle is replaced with a new one, perform the following procedure.
    1. Remove the shipping plug from the new transaxle.
    2. Remove the plug from the transaxle removed from the vehicle.
    3. Install the plug and washer that were removed to the new transaxle.

    CAUTION:
    • Verify that the torque converter stud bolts are inserted into the drive plate bolt holes, and install the transaxle installation bolts. Otherwise, the drive plate could be damaged.
  2. Verify that the torque converter stud bolts are inserted into the drive plate bolt holes from the starter installation hole.

  3. Install the transaxle mounting bolts.

    Tightening torque 

    38-52 N.m {3.9-5.3 kgf.m, 29-38 ft.lbf}

  4. Tighten the stud bolts for the transaxle.

    NOTE:
    • If the No. 4 engine mount bracket nut is loosened, tighten the stud bolts for the transaxle because they may be loosened.

    Tightening torque 
    15-25 N.m {1.6-2.5 kgf.m, 12-18 ft.lbf}
  5. Install the No. 4 engine mount bracket to No. 4 engine mount rubber, and temporarily tighten the installation bolt.

  6. Lift up the transaxle using the SSTs, pass the transaxle stud bolts through the No. 4 engine mount bracket, and temporarily tighten the No. 4 engine mount bracket installation nuts.

  7. Install the No. 1 engine mount bracket component, and tighten the installation bolts in the order shown in the figure.

    Tightening torque 

    131-153 N.m {14-15 kgf.m, 97-112 ft.lbf}

  8. Install the bracket to the transaxle and tighten the bolts in the order shown in the figure.

    Tightening torque 

    38-51 N.m {3.9-5.2 kgf.m, 29-37 ft.lbf}

  9. Tighten the bolt shown in the figure.

  10. Install the transfer. (See TRANSFER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [FW6AX-EL] ).
  11. Install the exhaust manifold (WU-TWC). (See EXHAUST SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [VIN M] ).
  12. Install the front crossmember component and No. 1 engine mount rubber as a single unit. (See FRONT CROSSMEMBER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  13. Temporarily tighten the No. 1 engine mount rubber installation bolts.

  14. Align the positions of the No. 4 engine mount bracket installation nuts with the No. 4 engine mount bracket.

  15. Tighten the No. 4 engine mount bracket installation nuts and bolt in the order shown in the figure.

    1, 2, 3 92-116 N.m {9.4-11 kgf.m, 69-85 ft.lbf}
    4 81-99 N.m {8.3-10 kgf.m, 60-73 ft.lbf}
  16. Remove the SST (49 C017 5A0, 49 L017 5A0).
  17. Tighten the No. 1 engine mount rubber installation bolts in the order shown in the figure.

    1 141-172 N.m {15-17 kgf.m, 104-126 ft.lbf}
    2 130-164 N.m {14-16 kgf.m, 96-120 ft.lbf}
  18. Install the propeller shaft. (See PROPELLER SHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  19. Install the TWC. (VIN M) (See EXHAUST SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [VIN M] ).
  20. Connect the hose clip to the bracket shown in the figure.

  21. Install the cowl panel. (See COWL PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  22. Install the keyless beeper. (With advanced keyless entry system) (See KEYLESS BEEPER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  23. Install the windshield wiper motor and link. (See WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR AND LINK REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  24. Install the cowl grille. (See COWL GRILLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  25. Install the windshield wiper arm and blade. (See WINDSHIELD WIPER ARM AND BLADE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  26. Fix the crankshaft pulley to lock the torque converter against rotation.

    CAUTION:
    • After temporarily tightening the torque converter installation nut uniformly, tighten it to the specified torque.
  27. Tighten the torque converter installation nut.

    Tightening torque 

    41-54 N.m {4.2-5.5 kgf.m, 31-39 ft.lbf}

  28. Install the blind cover.

  29. Install the starter. (See STARTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [VIN M] ).
  30. Install the front drive shaft (RH) to the transfer. (See FRONT DRIVE SHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  31. Connect the front drive shaft (LH) to the transaxle. (See FRONT DRIVE SHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  32. Connect front stabilizer control links to the front stabilizer. (See FRONT STABILIZER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  33. Connect the front lower arms to the steering knuckles. (See FRONT LOWER ARM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  34. Connect the tie-rod ends to the steering knuckles. (See STEERING GEAR AND LINKAGE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  35. Connect the clips securing the brake hose to the front shock absorbers. (See FRONT BRAKE HOSE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [WITH SINGLE PISTON FLOATING CALIPER] ).
  36. Connect the front ABS wheel-speed sensors to the steering knuckles. (See FRONT ABS WHEEL-SPEED SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  37. Install the lower radiator hose component. (See RADIATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [VIN M] .) (See COOLANT CONTROL VALVE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [VIN M] ).
  38. Install the water hose component. (Automatic transaxle replacement) (See OIL COOLER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  39. Install the oil cooler and water hose component as a single unit. (Except automatic transaxle replacement) (See OIL COOLER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  40. Connect the oil cooler to the transaxle with the hose connected. (Except automatic transaxle replacement) (See OIL COOLER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  41. Install the front under cover No. 1. (See FRONT UNDER COVER No. 1 REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  42. Install the front under cover No. 2. (See FRONT UNDER COVER No. 2 REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  43. Install the front tires. (See WHEEL AND TIRE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  44. Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering gear and linkage. (See STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  45. Install the joint cover. (See STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  46. Connect the breather hose to the transaxle.

  47. Install the selector cable bracket.

  48. Connect the selector cable to the transaxle. (See SELECTOR CABLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  49. Connect the ground cable to the No. 4 engine mount bracket.

  50. Install the wiring harness clip and wiring harness bracket.

  51. Tighten the wiring harness bracket installation bolts in the order shown in the figure.

  52. Connect the control valve body connector.

    CAUTION:
    • Make sure that your hand does not touch the terminal as the connector terminal could be damaged.
    • Verify that there is no fluid or foreign matter adhering to the connector before connecting the connector.
    • Insert the connector straight as the connector terminal could be damaged.
    • Rotate the connector lever until a click is heard.
  53. Install the splash shield. (See SPLASH SHIELD REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  54. Install the battery tray. (See BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [VIN M] ).
  55. Install the PCM component. (See PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [VIN M] ).
  56. Install the battery. (See BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [VIN M] ).
  57. Install the following parts as a single unit. (See INTAKE-AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [VIN M] ).
    • Air cleaner cover
    • Air cleaner element
    • Fresh-air duct
    • Air cleaner case
    • Air hose
    • Resonance chamber
  58. Connect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION ).
  59. Add the engine coolant. (See ENGINE COOLANT REPLACEMENT [VIN M] ).
  60. Add the ATF. (See AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID (ATF) REPLACEMENT ).
  61. Install the plug hole plate. (See PLUG HOLE PLATE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [VIN M] ).
  62. Perform the "TCM configuration" (Automatic transaxle replacement). (See TCM CONFIGURATION ).
  63. Perform the "Initial Learning" (Automatic transaxle replacement). (See INITIAL LEARNING ).
  64. Perform the "Mechanical System Test". (See MECHANICAL SYSTEM TEST ).
