Intention of troubleshooting procedure

Step 1
- Perform a unit inspection of the battery.
Step 2-3
- Verify if fuel in the fuel tank is dirty.
Step 4
- Perform a unit inspection of the fuel gauge sender unit.
Step 5-6
- Inspect the hose between the fuel tank (main) and the fuel tank (sub).
Step 7
- Perform a unit inspection of the fuel pump unit.
Repair completion verification
- Verify that the primary malfunction is resolved and there are no other malfunctions.

TROUBLESHOOTING DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

1	PURPOSE: INSPECT BATTERY FOR MALFUNCTION Inspect the applicable part. (See BATTERY INSPECTION [(US)] .) Is the part normal?	Yes	Go to the next step.

2	PURPOSE: VERIFY IF FUEL IN FUEL TANK IS DIRTY Remove the fuel gauge sender unit (sub). (See FUEL GAUGE SENDER UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(US)] .) Inspect for dirty fuel. Can any dirt be visually verified?	Yes	Clean the inside of the fuel tank and replace the fuel gauge sender unit and the fuel pump unit. (See FUEL PUMP UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN M) .) (See FUEL PUMP UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN 7, L) .) (See FUEL GAUGE SENDER UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(US)] .)
2		No	Go to the next step.
3	PURPOSE: VERIFY FUEL GAUGE SENDER UNIT (SUB) FILTER CONDITION Visually verify if the fuel gauge sender unit (sub) filter is clogged. Is the part normal?	Yes	Go to the next step.
3		No	Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification. (See FUEL GAUGE SENDER UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(US)] .)
4	PURPOSE: INSPECT FUEL GAUGE SENDER UNIT FOR MALFUNCTION Inspect the fuel gauge sender unit (main and sub). (See FUEL GAUGE SENDER UNIT INSPECTION [(US)] .) Is the part normal?	Yes	Go to the next step.
4		No	Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification. (See FUEL GAUGE SENDER UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(US)] .)
5	PURPOSE: VERIFY CONDITION INSIDE FUEL TANK Remove the fuel pump unit. (See FUEL PUMP UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN M) .) (See FUEL PUMP UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN 7, L) .) Perform the following inspections. Poor connection of hose between fuel tank (main) and fuel tank (sub) Breakage or bending of hose between fuel tank (main) and fuel tank (sub) Are all the items normal?	Yes	Go to the next step.
5		No	Replace the fuel tank and perform the repair completion verification. (See FUEL TANK REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN M) .) (See FUEL TANK REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN 7, L) .)
6	PURPOSE: INSPECT HOSE BETWEEN FUEL TANK (MAIN) AND FUEL TANK (SUB) FOR MALFUNCTION Perform the following procedure. Remove the fuel tank (main) quick release connector and the fuel tank (sub) quick release connector. (See QUICK RELEASE CONNECTOR (FUEL SYSTEM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN 7, L) .) (See QUICK RELEASE CONNECTOR (FUEL SYSTEM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN M) .) Verify the airflow by blowing air through the hose. Is there any clogging in the hose?	Yes	Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification. (See FUEL GAUGE SENDER UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(US)] .)
6		No	Go to the next step.
7	PURPOSE: INSPECT FUEL PUMP UNIT FOR MALFUNCTION Install the fuel pump unit. (See FUEL PUMP UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN M) .) (See FUEL PUMP UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN 7, L) .) Inspect the fuel pump unit. (See FUEL PUMP UNIT INSPECTION (VIN M) .) (See FUEL PUMP UNIT INSPECTION (VIN 7, L) .) Is the part normal?	Yes	Go to the next step.
7		No	Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification. (See FUEL PUMP UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN M) .) (See FUEL PUMP UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN 7, L) .)
Repair completion verification 1	PURPOSE: VERIFY THAT VEHICLE IS REPAIRED Install/connect the part removed/disconnected during the troubleshooting procedure. Clear the DTC recorded in the memory. (See CLEARING DTC .) Replicate the vehicle conditions at the time the DTC was detected using the following procedure. Implement the repeatability verification procedure. (See REPEATABILITY VERIFICATION PROCEDURE .) Refill the fuel. Perform the DTC inspection for the PCM. (See DTC INSPECTION .) Is the same Pending DTC present?	Yes	Refer to the controller area network (CAN) malfunction diagnosis flow to inspect for a CAN communication error. (See CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK (CAN) MALFUNCTION DIAGNOSIS FLOW [(US)] .) If the CAN communication is normal, perform the diagnosis from Step 1. If the malfunction recurs, replace the PCM, then go to the next step. (See PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN M) .) Repair completion verification 2	PURPOSE: VERIFY IF OTHER DTCs DISPLAYED Perform the DTC inspection. (See DTC INSPECTION .) Are any other DTCs displayed?	Yes	Repair the malfunctioning location according to the applicable DTC troubleshooting.
Repair completion verification 2		No	DTC troubleshooting completed.
