Intention of troubleshooting procedure

Step 1
- Perform a unit inspection of the OCV for hydraulic variable valve timing system.
Step 2
- Verify engine oil level.
Step 3-4
- Perform an inspection of the hydraulic variable valve timing drive parts.
Step 5
- Inspect the exhaust CMP sensor detection areas for adhesion of foreign matter.
Step 6-8
- Perform an engine oil related inspection.
Repair completion verification
- Verify that the primary malfunction is resolved and there are no other malfunctions.

TROUBLESHOOTING DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

1	PURPOSE: VERIFY IF SPOOL VALVE IN OCV FOR HYDRAULIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING SYSTEM IS STUCK Switch the ignition off. Remove the OCV for hydraulic variable valve timing system. (See OCV FOR HYDRAULIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN M) .) Inspect the OCV for hydraulic variable valve timing system. (See OCV FOR HYDRAULIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING SYSTEM INSPECTION (VIN M) .) Can the spool valve in OCV for hydraulic variable valve timing system operation be verified?	Yes	Go to the next step.
1		No	Replace the OCV for hydraulic variable valve timing system and perform the repair completion verification. (See OCV FOR HYDRAULIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN M) .)
2	PURPOSE: INSPECT ENGINE OIL LEVEL Inspect the engine oil level. (See ENGINE OIL LEVEL INSPECTION (VIN M) .) Is the engine oil level sufficient?	Yes	Go to the next step.
2		No	Add genuine motor oil and perform the repair completion verification. (See ENGINE OIL REPLACEMENT (VIN M) .)
3	PURPOSE: DETERMINE INTEGRITY OF HYDRAULIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR Inspect the hydraulic variable valve timing actuator. (See HYDRAULIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR INSPECTION (VIN M) .) Is there any malfunction?	Yes	Replace the hydraulic variable valve timing actuator and perform the repair completion verification. (See ELECTRIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR, HYDRAULIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN M) .)
3		No	Go to the next step.
4	PURPOSE: VERIFY ASSEMBLY CONDITION OF TIMING CHAIN Verify the condition of the timing chain assembly (exhaust valve timing, looseness, jumping). (See TIMING CHAIN REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN M) .) Is there any malfunction?	Yes	Repair or replace the malfunctioning part. Assemble the timing chain using the correct timing. (See TIMING CHAIN REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN M) .) Go to repair completion verification.
4		No	Go to the next step.
5	PURPOSE: VERIFY IF FOREIGN MATTER ON EXHAUST CMP SENSOR DETECTION AREA AFFECTS DIAGNOSTIC RESULTS Visually inspect for exhaust CMP sensor. (See CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR INSPECTION (VIN M) .) Is there foreign matter such as metallic dust on the exhaust CMP sensor detection area?	Yes	Remove the foreign matter and perform the repair completion verification.
5		No	Go to the next step.
6	PURPOSE: INSPECT IF INSUFFICIENT HYDRAULIC PRESSURE CAUSED BY USE OF UNSPECIFIED ENGINE OIL Is the specified engine oil being used?	Yes	Go to the next step.
6		No	Replace the engine oil with genuine motor oil and perform the repair completion verification. (See ENGINE OIL REPLACEMENT (VIN M) .)
7	PURPOSE: INSPECT ENGINE OIL PRESSURE Inspect the engine oil pressure. (See OIL PRESSURE INSPECTION (VIN M) .) Is there any malfunction?	Yes	Go to the next step.
7		No	Go to repair completion verification.
8	PURPOSE: VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION RELATED TO ENGINE OIL LEAK OR RESTRICTION AFFECTS DIAGNOSTIC RESULTS Start the engine. Verify if there is engine oil leakage in the oil passage or restriction. Is there engine oil leakage in the oil passage or restriction?	Yes	Repair or replace the malfunctioning location. Add genuine motor oil and perform the repair completion verification. (See ENGINE OIL REPLACEMENT (VIN M) .)
8		No	Go to the next step.
Repair completion verification 1	PURPOSE: VERIFY THAT VEHICLE IS REPAIRED Install/connect the part removed/disconnected during the troubleshooting procedure. Clear the DTC recorded in the memory. (See CLEARING DTC .) Replicate the vehicle conditions at the time the DTC was detected using the following procedure. Implement the repeatability verification procedure. (See REPEATABILITY VERIFICATION PROCEDURE .) Perform the DTC inspection for the PCM. (See DTC INSPECTION .) Is the same Pending DTC present?	Yes	Refer to the controller area network (CAN) malfunction diagnosis flow to inspect for a CAN communication error. (See CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK (CAN) MALFUNCTION DIAGNOSIS FLOW (US) .) If the CAN communication is normal, perform the diagnosis from Step 1. If the malfunction recurs, replace the PCM, then go to the next step. (See PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN M) .)
Repair completion verification 1		No	Go to the next step.
Repair completion verification 2	PURPOSE: VERIFY IF OTHER DTCs DISPLAYED Perform the DTC inspection. (See DTC INSPECTION .) Are any other DTCs displayed?	Yes	Repair the malfunctioning location according to the applicable DTC troubleshooting.
Repair completion verification 2		No	DTC troubleshooting completed.
