Determination Procedure

CAUTION:

When disconnecting the connector, verify that there is no looseness, damage, deformation, corrosion, or poor connection of the connector terminals.
When inspecting the connector, touch it with a paper clip or similar thin pin without directly inserting a tester probe into the terminal.

DETERMINING SHORT TO GROUND LOCATION (CAN-BUS No. 1) (US) DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

Step	Inspection		Action
1	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) AND CONNECTOR C-40 Switch the ignition off. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION (US) .) Disconnect the connector C-40. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Go to the next step.
1		No	Go to Step 3.
2	INSPECT CAN LINE IN BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) FOR SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect the connector 3 which has body control module (BCM) terminals 3X and 3W. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X (wiring harness side) and body ground Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W (wiring harness side) and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-40 and body control module (BCM) because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
2		No	Replace the body control module (BCM) because there is a short to ground in the body control module (BCM). (See BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
3	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN EPS CONTROL MODULE AND CONNECTOR C-40 Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between EPS control module terminal 2C and body ground Between EPS control module terminal 2A and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Go to the next step.
3		No	Go to Step 5.
4	INSPECT CAN LINE IN EPS CONTROL MODULE FOR SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect the EPS control module connector. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between EPS control module terminal 2C (wiring harness side) and body ground Between EPS control module terminal 2A (wiring harness side) and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the EPS control module and connector C-40 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
4		No	Replace the EPS control module because there is a short to ground in the EPS control module. (See STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (US) .)
5	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN AFS CONTROL MODULE/AUTO LEVELING CONTROL MODULE AND CONNECTOR C-40 Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between AFS control module/auto leveling control module terminal I and body ground Between AFS control module/auto leveling control module terminal J and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Go to the next step.
5		No	Go to Step 7.
6	INSPECT CAN LINE IN AFS CONTROL MODULE/AUTO LEVELING CONTROL MODULE FOR SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect the AFS control module/auto leveling control module connector. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between AFS control module/auto leveling control module terminal I (wiring harness side) and body ground Between AFS control module/auto leveling control module terminal J (wiring harness side) and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the AFS control module/auto leveling control module and connector C-40 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
6		No	Replace the AFS control module/auto leveling control module because there is a short to ground in the AFS control module/auto leveling control module. (See ADAPTIVE FRONT LIGHTING SYSTEM (AFS) CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
7	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-40 AND CONNECTOR C-13 Connect the connector C-40. Disconnect the connector C-13. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-40 and connector C-13 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
7		No	Go to the next step.
8	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-13 AND CONNECTOR C-21 Connect the connector C-13. Disconnect the connector C-21. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-13 and connector C-21 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
8		No	Go to the next step.
9	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN SAS CONTROL MODULE AND CONNECTOR C-21 Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between SAS control module terminal 3A and body ground Between SAS control module terminal 3D and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Go to the next step.
9		No	Go to Step 13.
10	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-21 AND CONNECTORS C-55, C-56 Disconnect the connectors C-55, C-56. Connect the connector C-21. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-21 and connectors C-55, C-56 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
10		No	Go to the next step.
11	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN SAS CONTROL MODULE AND CONNECTORS C-55, C-56 Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between SAS control module terminal 3A and body ground Between SAS control module terminal 3D and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Go to the next step.
11		No	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connectors C-55, C-56 and connector C-21 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
12	INSPECT CAN LINE IN SAS CONTROL MODULE FOR SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect the SAS control module connector. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between SAS control module terminal 3A (wiring harness side) and body ground Between SAS control module terminal 3D (wiring harness side) and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the SAS control module and connectors C-55, C-56 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
12		No	Replace the SAS control module because there is a short to ground in the SAS control module. (See SAS CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM - US/CANADA SPEC.] .)
13	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-21 AND CONNECTOR C-07 Connect the connector C-21. Disconnect the connector C-07. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-21 and connector C-07 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
13		No	Go to the next step. ((VIN Y) (ATX)) (with connectors C-37, C-36) Go to Step 20. ((VIN Y) (ATX)) (without connectors C-37, C-36) Go to Step 24. (VINs 7, L, M (MTX)) (with connectors C-37, C-36) Go to Step 28. (VINs 7, L, M (MTX)) (without connectors C-37, C-36)
14	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN TCM AND CONNECTOR C-07/CONNECTORS C-37, C-36 Disconnect the connectors C-37, C-36. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between TCM terminal E and body ground Between TCM terminal F and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Go to Step 17.
14		No	Go to the next step.
15	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-02 AND CONNECTOR C-07/CONNECTORS C-37, C-36 Disconnect the connector C-02. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between TCM terminal E and body ground Between TCM terminal F and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-02 and connector C-07/connectors C-37, C-36 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
15		No	Go to the next step.
16	INSPECT CAN LINE IN TCM FOR SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect the TCM. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between TCM terminal E (wiring harness side) and body ground Between TCM terminal F (wiring harness side) and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the TCM and connector C-02 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
16		No	Replace the TCM because there is a short to ground in the TCM. (See CONTROL VALVE BODY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [GW6AX-EL (US)] .) (See CONTROL VALVE BODY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [ET6A-EL (US)] .) (See CONTROL VALVE BODY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [EV6A-EL, EV6AX-EL] .)
17	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN DSC HU/CM AND CONNECTORS C-37, C-36 Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between DSC HU/CM terminal L and body ground Between DSC HU/CM terminal J and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Go to the next step.
17		No	Go to Step 19.
18	INSPECT CAN LINE IN DSC HU/CM FOR SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect the DSC HU/CM connector. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between DSC HU/CM terminal L (wiring harness side) and body ground Between DSC HU/CM terminal J (wiring harness side) and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the DSC HU/CM and connectors C-37, C-36 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
18		No	Replace the DSC HU/CM because there is a short to ground in the DSC HU/CM. (See DSC HU/CM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [L.H.D. (US)] .)
19	INSPECT CAN LINE IN PCM FOR SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect the PCM connector. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between PCM terminal 2S (wiring harness side) and body ground Between PCM terminal 2T (wiring harness side) and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the PCM and connectors C-37, C-36 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
19		No	Replace the PCM because there is a short to ground in the PCM. (See PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(VIN Y) (US)] .)
20	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-38 AND TCM Disconnect the connector C-38. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between TCM terminal E and body ground Between TCM terminal F and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Go to Step 22.
20		No	Go to the next step.
21	INSPECT CAN LINE IN TCM FOR SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect the TCM. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between TCM terminal E (wiring harness side) and body ground Between TCM terminal F (wiring harness side) and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the TCM and connector C-02 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.

22	INSPECT CAN LINE IN DSC HU/CM FOR SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect the DSC HU/CM connector. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between DSC HU/CM terminal L (wiring harness side) and body ground Between DSC HU/CM terminal J (wiring harness side) and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the DSC HU/CM and connectors C-37, C-36 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
22		No	Replace the DSC HU/CM because there is a short to ground in the DSC HU/CM. (See DSC HU/CM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [L.H.D. (US)] .)
23	INSPECT CAN LINE IN PCM FOR SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect the PCM connector. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between PCM terminal 2S (wiring harness side) and body ground Between PCM terminal 2T (wiring harness side) and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the PCM and connector C-07 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
23		No	Replace the PCM because there is a short to ground in the PCM. (See PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(VIN Y) (US)] .)
24	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-07 AND CONNECTORS C-37, C-36 Connect the connector C-07. Disconnect the connectors C-37, C-36. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-07 and connectors C-37, C-36 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
24		No	Go to the next step.
25	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN DSC HU/CM AND CONNECTORS C-37, C-36 Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between DSC HU/CM terminal L and body ground Between DSC HU/CM terminal J and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Go to the next step.
25		No	Go to Step 27.
26	INSPECT CAN LINE IN DSC HU/CM FOR SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect the DSC HU/CM connector. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between DSC HU/CM terminal L (wiring harness side) and body ground Between DSC HU/CM terminal J (wiring harness side) and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the DSC HU/CM and connectors C-37, C-36 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
26		No	Replace the DSC HU/CM because there is a short to ground in the DSC HU/CM. (See DSC HU/CM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [L.H.D. (US)] .)
27	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTORS C-37, C-36 AND CONNECTOR C-02 Connect the connectors C-37, C-36. Disconnect the connector C-02. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connectors C-37, C-36 and connector C-02 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
27		No	Go to Step 30. (VINs 7, L, M Go to Step 34. (VINs 7, L, M )
28	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN DSC HU/CM AND CONNECTOR C-07/CONNECTOR C-02 Disconnect the connector C-02. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between DSC HU/CM terminal L and body ground Between DSC HU/CM terminal J and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Go to the next step.
28		No	Go to Step 30. (VINs 7, L, M) (ATX)) Go to Step 34. (VINs 7, L, M) (MTX))
29	INSPECT CAN LINE IN DSC HU/CM FOR SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect the DSC HU/CM connector. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between DSC HU/CM terminal L (wiring harness side) and body ground Between DSC HU/CM terminal J (wiring harness side) and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the DSC HU/CM C-07/connector C-02 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
29		No	Replace the DSC HU/CM because there is a short to ground in the DSC HU/CM. (See DSC HU/CM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [L.H.D. (US)] .)
30	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-02 AND CONNECTOR C-38 Connect the connector C-02. Disconnect the connector C-38. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-02 and connector C-38 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
30		No	Go to the next step.
31	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN TCM AND CONNECTOR C-38 Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between TCM terminal E and body ground Between TCM terminal F and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Go to the next step.
31		No	Go to Step 33.
32	INSPECT CAN LINE IN TCM FOR SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect the TCM connector. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between TCM terminal E (wiring harness side) and body ground Between TCM terminal F (wiring harness side) and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the TCM and connector C-38 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
32		No	Replace the TCM because there is a short to ground in the TCM. (See CONTROL VALVE BODY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [GW6AX-EL (US)] .) (See CONTROL VALVE BODY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [ET6A-EL (US)] .) (See CONTROL VALVE BODY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [EV6A-EL, EV6AX-EL] .)
33	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-38 AND CONNECTOR C-01 Connect the connector C-38. Disconnect the connector C-01. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-38 and connector C-01 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
33		No	Go to Step 35.
34	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-02 AND CONNECTOR C-01 Connect the connector C-02. Disconnect the connector C-01. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-02 and connector C-01 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
34		No	Go to the next step.
35	INSPECT CAN LINE IN PCM FOR SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect the PCM connector. Inspect for continuity at the following terminals: Between PCM terminal 2S (wiring harness side) and body ground Between PCM terminal 2T (wiring harness side) and body ground Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the PCM and connector C-01 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
35		No	Replace the PCM because there is a short to ground in the PCM. (See PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(VIN 7 & VIN L) (US)] .) (See PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(VIN M) (US)] .)
