Electric Parking Brake Forced Release Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2017 Mazda 3. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION:
- Perform the electric parking brake forced release if the electric parking brake cannot be released by operating the electric parking brake switch or performing a recovery operation using the ignition switch due to a malfunction in the system or a discharged battery.
- Perform a DTC inspection before performing the electric parking brake forced release, and perform the procedure after verifying the malfunctioning location. (See DTC INSPECTION [ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE] .)
NOTE:
- The clearance between the disc plate and disc pads is expanded after an electric parking brake forced release, therefore operation of the electric parking brake motor gear unit when the electric parking brake switch is initially operated after the servicing may take longer than normal.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [SKYACTIV-G 2.0, SKYACTIV-G 2.5] .)
- Remove the wheel and tire. (See WHEEL AND TIRE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
- Remove the electric parking brake motor gear unit. (See ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE MOTOR GEAR UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
- Rotate the spindle approx. 2 times in the direction of the arrow shown in the figure.
- Rotate the disc plate and verify if the electric parking brake has been released.
- If the electric parking brake has not been released, rotate the spindle approx. 1 time in the same direction shown in step 2 and verify if the electric parking brake has been released.
- Install the electric parking brake motor gear unit. (See ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE MOTOR GEAR UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
- Connect the negative battery cable. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [SKYACTIV-G 2.0, SKYACTIV-G 2.5] .)

- Switch the ignition ON (engine off).
- Operate the electric parking brake.
- If the electric parking brake cannot be operated, release it once and then try to re-operate it.
- If the electric parking brake cannot be operated/released, perform a DTC inspection as a malfunction of the electric parking brake may have occurred. (See DTC INSPECTION [ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE] .)
- If the electric parking brake cannot be operated, release it once and then try to re-operate it.
- Verify that the electric parking brake indicator light turns on and the electric parking brake warning light turns off.
- If the electric parking brake indicator light does not turn on, the electric parking brake indicator light flashes, or the electric parking brake warning light does not turn off, perform a DTC inspection as a malfunction of the electric parking brake may have occurred. (See DTC INSPECTION [ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE] .)
