Diagnostic Procedure

STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 VERIFY MALFUNCTION CONDITION 
  • Does the shift shock occur only when the engine is cold?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Go to Step 3.
2 VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS TCM FOR POOR GND OR INPUT SIGNAL 
  • Disconnect the TCM connector.
  • Is the resistance between the GND terminal at the TCM connector and the body GND less than 5.0 ohms  ?
Yes Inspect the value at the following PCM and TCM PIDs using the M-MDS (IDS).

  • PCM PIDs: 
  • APP
  • RPM
  • TCM PIDs: 
  • THOP
  • TFT
  • TFTV

Repair or replace any malfunctioning parts according to the inspection result.
(See PCM INSPECTION .)
No Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible open circuit.
Reconnect the TCM connector.
3 DETERMINE IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS TRANSAXLE POSITION SIGNAL OR CONTROL SIGNAL  Yes Go to the next step.
No Go to Step 5.
4 VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS TRANSAXLE POSITION SIGNAL OR TRANSAXLE (INCLUDING CONTROL VALVE BODY)  Yes Overhaul the control valve body and repair or replace any malfunctioning parts.

If any problem remains, overhaul the transaxle and repair or replace any malfunctioning parts.

No Repair or replace any malfunctioning parts according to the inspection result.
5 INSPECT THROTTLE OPENING SIGNAL FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace any malfunctioning parts according to the inspection result.
6 INSPECT TCM FOR POOR GND 
  • Disconnect the TCM connector.
  • Is the resistance between the GND terminal at the TCM connector and the body GND less than 5.0 ohms  ?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible open circuit.
Reconnect the TCM connector.
7 VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS LINE PRESSURE CONTROL SIGNAL OR TRANSAXLE (INCLUDING CONTROL VALVE BODY)  Yes Overhaul the control valve body and repair or replace any malfunctioning parts.

If any problem remains, overhaul the transaxle and repair or replace any malfunctioning parts.

No Repair or replace any malfunctioning parts according to the inspection result.

  • Verify the test results.
    • If normal, return to the diagnostic index to service any additional symptoms.
    • If the malfunction remains, inspect the related Service Bulletins and/or On-line Repair Information and perform repair or diagnosis.
      • If the vehicle is repaired, troubleshooting is completed.
      • If the vehicle is not repaired or additional diagnostic information is not available, replace the TCM.
