Front Axle Wheel Hub & Steering Knuckle: Removal

Remove in the order indicated in the illustration. See Fig 1 .
Lock Nut Removal Note
- Knock the crimped portion of the lock nut outward using a small chisel and a hammer. See Fig 2 .
- Lock the hub by applying the brakes.
- Remove the lock nut.
NOTE:
To remove the axle shaft, it is only necessary to remove the steering knuckle and hub assembly, not disassemble it. Disassemble the steering knuckle/hub assembly only if the components are damaged or worn out.
Wheel Hub Component Removal Note
- Remove the wheel hub component using the Wheel Hub Puller (49-F026-103) and Removal/Installation Adapter (49-G033-105). See Fig 3 .
- If the bearing inner race remains on the front wheel hub component, grind a section of the bearing inner race until approximately. 0.02" (0.5 mm) remains. Then remove it using a chisel.
Wheel Bearing Removal Note - Remove the wheel bearing using a Wheel Hub Puller (49-F026-103), a Handle (49-G030-797) and a Bearing Installer (49-S033-108). See Fig 4 .
Dust Cover Removal Note - The dust cover does not need to be removed unless it is being replaced. Mark the dust cover and steering knuckle for proper installation. See Fig 5 . Remove the dust cover using a chisel.
Hub Bolt Removal Note - The hub bolts do not need to be removed unless they are being replaced. Remove the hub bolts using a press. See Fig 6 .
