Assembly Note

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda Tribute. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING:
  • Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an air bag module. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING:
  • Carry a live side air bag module with the air bag and tear seam pointed away from your body. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING:
  • Do not set a live side air bag module down on the cover tear seam. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING:
  • After deployment, the air bag surface can contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterward.
WARNING:
  • Never probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so can result in air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.
WARNING:
  • Vehicle sensor orientation is critical for proper system operation. If a vehicle equipped with an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) is involved in a collision, inspect the sensor mounting bracket and wiring pigtail for deformation. Replace and properly position the sensor or any other damaged supplemental restraint system (SRS) components whether or not the air bag is deployed.
WARNING:
  • To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before servicing, replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.

The side air bag sensors are located at or near the base of the B- pillar.

To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).

WARNING:
  • The air bag diagnostic tool is for restraint system repair only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
NOTE:
  • If a seat equipped with a seat-mounted side air bag system is being repaired the air bag system must be deactivated per the deactivation procedure contained in AIR BAG AND SAFETY BELT PRETENSIONER SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS), see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
NOTE:
  • Restraint system diagnostic tools must be installed under the seats in the side air bag to floor connector.
NOTE:
  • Diagnostics or repairs are not to be carried out on a side air bag system or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) with the seat in the vehicle. Prior to attempting to diagnose/repair the side air bag system or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) the seat must be removed from the vehicle and the air bag must be installed in side air bag connector at the floor connector. The air bag must be removed prior to operating the vehicle.
NOTE:
  • Diagnostics may be carried out on seat systems other than the side air bag system or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) (lumbar, climate controlled, heated, power seat track) with the seat installed in the vehicle as long as the restraint system WDS or equivalent Tester is installed under the seat in the side air bag to floor connector.
NOTE:
  • After diagnosing/repairing a seat system the restraint system WDS or equivalent Tester must be removed before operating the vehicle.
NOTE:
  • A repair is made by installing a new part only. If a new part is installed and the new part does not correct the condition, install the original part and carry out the diagnostic procedure again.
NOTE:
  • If a side air bag deployment took place, a new seatback pad, trim cover, and side air bag module must be installed. A new seatback frame should be installed if necessary.

Vehicles with side air bag

WARNING:
  • Inspect the mounting surfaces of the side air bag module and the seat back frame mounting for any foreign objects before installing the side air bag module. If any foreign objects are found, remove them. Failure to do so may result in personal injury in the event of an air bag deployment.
WARNING:
  • Inspect the side air bag cavity in the seat back pad for any foreign objects. If any foreign objects are found, remove them. Failure to do so may result in personal injury in the event of an air bag deployment.
WARNING:
  • Before installing the side air bag module, check the air bag for damage and foreign objects. If any foreign objects are found, remove them. Failure to do so may result in personal injury in the event of an air bag deployment.
  1. Install the side air bag module.
    1. Install the side air bag module.
    2. Install the nuts.

      All vehicles

  2. Install the front backrest rest pad to the front backrest frame.

  3. Install the front seat backrest trim cover.

  4. Connect the front seat backrest J-retainer.
  5. If equipped, install the headrest guides and headrest.

  6. Install the front seat backrest.
    1. Install the backrest.
    2. Install the pivot nut.

  7. Install the front seat backrest bolts.

  8. Install the inboard seat cushion side shield.

  9. Install the outboard seat cushion side shield.
    1. Install the shield.
    2. Install the screw.
    3. Install the seat backrest handle.

      CAUTION:
      • Use care when handling the seat and track assembly. Dropping the assembly or sitting on a seat not secured in the vehicle may result in damaged components.
  10. Install the passenger seat.
    1. Install the passenger seat.
    2. Install the seat track to floor bolts.
  11. Position the passenger seat forward.

  12. Install the seat track to floor nuts.
  13. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.

    Vehicles with side air bag

  14. Remove the special tool from the passenger seat side air bag module body harness electrical connector.

  15. Connect the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector.

    All vehicles

  16. Remove the special tool from the passenger seat safety belt pretensioner body harness electrical connector.

  17. Connect the passenger seat safety belt pretensioner electrical connector.
  18. Connect the battery ground cable.
  19. With the remaining special tools still in place, prove out the air bag system. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG AND SAFETY BELT PRETENSIONER SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS), see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
  20. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.

  21. Remove the special tool from the driver seat safety belt pretensioner body harness electrical connector.

  22. Connect the driver seat safety belt pretensioner electrical connector.

  23. Remove the special tool from the driver seat side air bag module body harness electrical connector.

  24. Connect the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector.

    All vehicles

  25. Remove the special tool from the steering column harness side of the driver air bag module electrical connector.

  26. Connect the driver air bag module electrical connector.

  28. Remove the special tool to the instrument panel harness side of the passenger air bag module electrical connector.

  29. Connect the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
  30. Raise the glove compartment.
    1. Depress the locking tabs.
  31. Connect the battery ground cable.
  32. Prove out the air bag system. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG AND SAFETY BELT PRETENSIONER SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS), see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
  33. Check the restraint system for correct operation.
