Diagnostic Procedures
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mazda MPV and 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Record freeze frame data. Check for service bulletins and on-line information. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to next step.
- Classify Intermittent Concern Or Continuous Concern - Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, clear DTC. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine and warm up completely. Recheck DTCs. If DTC P0505 is present, go to next step. If DTC is not present, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
- Inspect Poor Connection Of IAC Valve Connector - Turn ignition off. Disconnect IAC valve harness connector. Check for damaged, loose or corroded terminals. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is present, repair terminal or connector as necessary. After repair, go to step 13.
- Inspect IAC Valve Electrical Malfunction - Measure resistance between IAC valve terminals. If resistance reading is 8.7-10.6 ohms, go to next step. If resistance reading is not as specified, replace IAC valve. After repair, go to step 13.
- Classify Malfunction At Power Supply Circuit Or Control Circuit - Turn ignition on, engine off. Measure voltage between ground and IAC valve harness connector terminal "A" (White/Red wire). If battery voltage is not present, malfunction is in power supply circuit. Go to next step. If battery voltage is present, malfunction is in control circuit. Go to step 10.
- Inspect Poor Connection Of PCM Connector -
Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Check for damaged, loose or corroded terminals. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is present, repair terminal or connector as necessary. After repair, go to step 13.NOTE: Wire color changes between IAC valve and PCM at inline connector "X-06".
- Inspect Power Circuit For Short To Ground - Check for continuity between ground and IAC valve harness connector terminal "A" (White/Red wire). If continuity is not present, go to next step. If continuity is present, repair short to ground between IAC valve harness connector terminal "A" (White/Red wire) and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 54 (Black/Orange wire). After repair, go to step 13.
- Inspect Power Circuit For Open - Turn ignition off. Connect 104-pin Breakout Box (49-UN01-130) to PCM harness connector only. See Figure. Check for continuity between IAC valve harness connector terminal "A" (White/Red wire) and breakout box terminal No. 54. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open circuit between IAC valve harness connector terminal "A" (White/Red wire) and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 54 (Black/Orange wire). After repair, go to step 13.
- Inspect Poor Connection Of PCM Connector -
Disconnect 104-pin Breakout Box (49-UN01-130) from PCM harness connector. Check for damaged, loose or corroded terminals. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is present, repair terminal or connector as necessary. After repair, go to step 13.NOTE: Wire color changes between IAC valve and PCM at inline harness connector "X-07".
- Inspect Control Circuit For Short To Power - Reconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on, engine off. Measure voltage between ground and IAC valve harness connector terminal "B" (White/Light Blue wire). If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, repair short to power between IAC valve harness connector terminal "B" (White/Light Blue wire) and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 83 (Gray/Blue wire). After repair, go to step 13.
- Inspect Control Circuit For Short To Ground - Turn ignition off. Check for continuity between ground and IAC valve harness connector terminal "B" (White/Light Blue wire). If continuity is not present, go next step. If continuity is present, repair short to ground between IAC valve harness connector terminal "B" (White/Light Blue wire) and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 83 (Gray/Blue wire). After repair, go to step 13.
- Inspect Control Circuit Malfunction For Open - Turn ignition off. Connect 104-pin Breakout Box (49-UN01-130) to PCM harness connector only. See Figure. Check for continuity between IAC valve harness connector terminal "B" (White/Light Blue wire) and breakout box terminal No. 83. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open circuit between IAC valve harness connector terminal "B" (White/Light Blue wire) and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 83 (Gray/Blue wire). After repair, go to next step.
- Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTC P0505 Completed - Reconnect all disconnected connectors. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, clear DTC. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine and warm up completely. Recheck DTCs. If DTC P0505 is present, replace PCM. After repair, go to next step. If DTC P0505 is not present, go to next step.
- Verify After Repair Procedure - Using scan tool, perform after repair procedure. See AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE . If DTC is not present, testing is complete. If any DTC is present, go to appropriate test for diagnosis and repair.
