Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mazda MPV and 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Record freeze frame data. Check for service bulletins and on-line information. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to next step.
  2. Verify Current Input Signal Status - Is Concern Intermittent Or Constant -  Start engine. Using scan tool, access VSS PID. PID reading should be 12.4-24.8 MPH and equal speedometer reading. If PID readings are not as specified, go to next step. If PID readings are as specified, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  3. Check Input/Output Check Mode -  Turn ignition on, engine off. Check instrument cluster input/output check mode. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If DTCs 10 or 12 are not displayed, go to next step. If DTCs 10 or 12 are displayed, diagnose and repair as necessary.
  4. Inspect PCM Connector For Poor Connection -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Check for damaged, loose or corroded terminals. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is present, repair terminal or connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  9.
  5. Inspect Instrument Cluster Connector For Poor Connection -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster 20-pin harness connector. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Check for damaged, loose or corroded terminals. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is present, repair terminal or connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  9.
  6. Inspect Voltage -  Reconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on, engine off. Measure voltage at instrument cluster 20-pin harness connector terminal No. 2O (Green/Red wire). If 5.0 volts is present, replace instrument cluster. After repair, go to step  9. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
  7. Inspect Instrument Cluster Circuit For Open Circuit -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Connect 104-pin Breakout Box (49-UN01-130) to PCM harness connector only. See Figure. Check for continuity between instrument cluster 20-pin harness connector terminal No. 2O (Green/Red wire) and breakout box terminal No. 58. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open in Green/Red wire between instrument cluster 20-pin harness connector terminal No. 2O and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 58. After repair, go to step  9.
  8. Inspect Instrument Cluster Circuit For Short To Ground -  Check for continuity on Green/Red wire between ground and instrument cluster 20-pin harness connector terminal No. 2O. If continuity is not present, replace instrument cluster. After repair, go to next step. If continuity is present, repair short to ground in Green/Red wire between instrument cluster 20-pin harness connector terminal No. 2O and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 58. After repair, go to next step.
  9. Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTC P0500 Completed -  Reconnect all disconnected connectors. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, clear DTC. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Warm up engine. Drive vehicle with engine speed at 2000 RPM or more with 40 percent or more load for 16 seconds (gear selector not in park or neutral). Recheck DTCs. If DTC P0500 is present, replace PCM. After repair, go to next step. If DTC P0500 is not present, go to next step.
  10. Verify After Repair Procedure -  Using scan tool, perform after repair procedure. See AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE . If DTC is not present, testing is complete. If any DTC is present, go to appropriate test for diagnosis and repair.
