Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mazda MPV and 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Record freeze frame data. Check for service bulletins and on-line information. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to next step.
  2. Verify CMP Sensor Voltage -  Disconnect CMP sensor harness connector. Connect DVOM between CMP sensor terminals. Check AC voltage output while cranking engine. If voltage reading is not present, go to next step. If any AC voltage reading is present, go to step  4.
  3. Check CMP Circuit Resistance -  Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between CMP sensor terminals "A" and "B". If resistance reading is 308-376 ohms, check camshaft pulley for damage. Replace if damaged. After repair, go to step  10. If resistance reading is not as specified, replace CMP sensor. After repair, go to step  10.
  4. Check CMP Circuit For Short To Ground -  Disconnect CMP sensor harness connector. Check for continuity between ground and CMP sensor harness connector terminals "A" (Blue/Orange wire) and "B" (Brown/Light Green wire). If continuity is not present, go to next step. If continuity is present, repair short to ground in suspect wire. See appropriate wiring diagram under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to step  10.
  5. Inspect CMP Circuits For Shorts -  Check for continuity between CMP sensor harness connector terminals. If continuity is not present, go to step  8. If continuity is present, repair short in wire harness. After repair, go to step  10.
  6. Inspect Poor Connection Of CMP Sensor Connector -  Check CMP sensor connector. If connector is okay and connected securely, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  10.
  7. Inspect Poor Connection Of PCM Connector -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Check for poor connection (damaged, pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc.). If no problem is found, go to next step. If there is any malfunction, repair terminal as necessary. After repair, go to step  10.
  8. Inspect CMP Circuit For Open -  Disconnect CMP sensor harness connector and PCM 104-pin harness connector. Connect 104-pin Breakout Box (49-UN01-130) to PCM harness connector only. See Figure. Check for continuity between CKP sensor harness connector terminal "A" and breakout box terminal No. 85 and between CKP sensor harness connector terminal "B" and breakout box terminal No. 86. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open in suspect circuit. After repair, go to step  10.
  9. Check CMP Sensor Resistance -  Check resistance between CMP sensor terminals. If resistance is 308-376 ohms, check for poor connection or bent terminals. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace CMP sensor. After repair, go to next step.
  10. Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTC P0340 Completed -  Reconnect all components. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, clear DTC. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine. Access MAF PID. Ensure MAF PID reading is more than 2.7 gram/sec. Recheck DTCs. If DTC P0340 is present, replace PCM. After repair, go to next step. If DTC P0340 is not present, go to next step.
  11. Verify After Repair Procedure -  Using scan tool, perform After Repair Procedure. See AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE . If no other DTCs are present, testing is complete. If any other DTC is present, go to applicable test and repair.
