DTC 32: Right-Side Air Bag Sensor Malfunction

NOTE:
On models equipped without side air bags, DTCs 22, 25, 26, 32, 35, or 37 may be indicated concurrently. Diagnose the problem using the smallest DTC only.
- Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . On models equipped without side air bags, go to step 6. On models equipped with side air bags, turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait 60 minutes or more. If DTC 22 is indicated, go to next step. If DTC 22 is not indicated, test is complete.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access SAS control module and disconnect all harness connectors. See SAS CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect air bag system wiring harness between SAS control module connector terminal 1L and right-side air bag sensor connector terminal "A" (Blue wire), between SAS control module connector terminal 1J and right-side air bag sensor connector terminal "B" (Blue/Yellow wire), between SAS control module connector terminal 1H and right-side air bag sensor connector terminal "C" (Blue/White wire) and between SAS control module connector terminal 1G and right-side air bag sensor connector terminal "D" (Light Green wire) for short to ground, short to power supply or an open circuit. See Figure & Figure . If wiring harness is okay and DTC 32 was retrieved as a present malfunction DTC, go to next step. If wiring harness is okay and DTC 32 was retrieved as a past malfunction DTC, replace right air bag sensor and go to step 7. See SIDE AIR BAG SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If wiring harness is not okay, replace air bag wiring harness and go to step 7.
- Measure continuity between SAS connector terminals 1H and 2Q. See Figure. If there is continuity, go to next step. If there is not continuity, replace SAS control module and go to step 7.
- Reconnect connectors to SAS control module, clockspring, passenger-side air bag module, driver- and passenger-side seat belt pretensioners and right and left-side air bag modules. Reconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and right-side air bag sensor connector terminal "A". See Figure. If voltage is about 5 volts, replace right-side air bag sensor and go to next step. If voltage is not about 5 volts, replace SAS control module and go to step 7.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at more than one minute for back-up power to deplete. Connect right-side air bag sensor connector. Reconnect negative battery cable and turn ignition switch to ON position. If DTC 32 is indicated, replace SAS control module and go to step 7. If DTC 32 is not indicated, go to step 7.
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access SAS control module and disconnect all connectors. See SAS CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check air bag wiring harness between ground and SAS connector terminal 2AA (Gray wire) for short to power supply or open circuit. See Figure. If wiring harness is okay and DTC 22 was retrieved as a present malfunction DTC, replace SAS control module and go to next step. If wiring harness is okay and DTC 22 was retrieved as a past malfunction DTC, go to next step. If wiring harness is not okay, replace air bag wiring harness and go to next step.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Reconnect all connectors and install previously removed components. Reconnect negative battery cable. Clear past malfunction DTCs. See CLEARING PAST MALFUNCTION DTCS under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If AIR BAG warning light operates normally, trouble shooting is complete. If AIR BAG warning light does not operate normally, reconfirm malfunction symptoms.
