DTC 6: Driver-Side Air Bag Module Circuit

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Turn ignition to LOCK position. Remove negative battery cable. Wait more than one minute for back-up power supply to dissipate. Remove driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect pins and separator of upper clockspring connector for damage. If pins and separator are okay and this is present DTC, go to next step. If pins and separator are okay and this is past DTC, Go to step  6. If pins or separator are bent or broken, replace clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  9.
  2. Connect leads of Fuel and Thermometer Checker (49 0839 285) to upper clockspring connector. See Fig 1. Set resistance of thermometer checker to 2 ohms. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition on and check DTC. If DTC 6 is displayed, go to next step. If DTC 6 is not displayed, replace driver-side air bag module. Go to step  9.
  3. Turn ignition off. Remove negative battery cable. Wait more than one minute for back-up power supply to dissipate. Disconnect lower clockspring connector. Inspect pins and separator of lower clockspring connector for damage. If pins and separator are okay, go to next step. If pins or separator are bent or broken, replace wiring harness. Go to step  9.
  4. Connect leads of Fuel And Thermometer Checker (49 0839 285) to harness side of lower clockspring connector. See Fig 1. Set resistance of thermometer checker to 2 ohms. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition on and check DTC. If DTC 6 is displayed, go to next step. If DTC 6 is not displayed, replace clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  9.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Check Yellow/Red wire between SAS control module connector terminal No. 2D and lower clockspring connector for short to ground, short to power and open circuit. See Figure. Check Yellow/Black wire between SAS control module connector terminal No. 2G and lower clockspring connector for short to ground, short to power and open circuit. If wiring is okay, replace SAS control module. See SAS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  9. If wiring is defective, replace wiring harness. Go to step  9.
  6. Disconnect lower clockspring connector. Inspect pins and separator of lower clockspring connector for damage. If pins and separator are okay, go to next step. If pins or separator are bent or broken, replace wiring harness. Go to step  9.
  7. Inspect clock spring for damage, open circuit or short to ground. If clock spring is okay, go to next step. If clockspring is defective, replace clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  9.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Check Yellow/Red wire between SAS control module connector terminal No. 2D and lower clockspring connector for short to ground, short to power and open circuit. See Figure. Check Yellow/Black wire between SAS control module connector terminal No. 2G and lower clockspring connector for short to ground, short to power and open circuit. If wiring is okay, replace SAS control module. See SAS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to next step. If wiring is defective, replace wiring harness. Go to next step.
  9. Reconnect all connectors. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . Ensure AIR BAG warning light is operating properly. If not, reconfirm malfunction symptoms.
