Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Has FREEZE FRAME PID DATA been recorded? If yes, go to next step. If no, record FREEZE FRAME PID DATA on repair order, then go to next step.
  2. Check for related service bulletins and/or on-line repair information availability. Is any related repair information available? If no, go to next step. If yes, perform repair or diagnosis according to available repair information. If vehicle is still not repaired, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect transaxle connector No. 2 (8-pin). See Figure. Check for poor connection (damaged or pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc.). Are terminals okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair or replace terminals, then go to step  12.
  4. Measure resistance between terminals "E" and "F" on transaxle connector No. 2 (component side). Is resistance within 513-627 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  8.
  5. Disconnect TCM connector. Check for poor connection (damaged or pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc.). Are terminals okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair terminals, then go to step  12.
  6. Check continuity between following terminals:
    • Transaxle connector No. 2 terminal "F" and TCM terminal 2F.
    • Transaxle connector No. 2 terminal "E" and TCM terminal 1N.
    Is there continuity? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair or replace harness, then go to step  12.
  7. Check continuity between following terminals:
    • Transaxle connector No. 2 terminal "F" and ground.
    • Transaxle connector No. 2 terminal "E" and ground.
    Is there continuity? If no, go to next step. If yes, repair or replace harness, then go to step  12.
  8. Remove the control valve body cover. Disconnect coupler connector (8-pin). Check for poor connection (damaged or pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc.). Are terminals okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair connector terminals, then go to step  12.
  9. Measure resistance between terminals "A" and "B" on coupler connector (8-pin). Is resistance within 513-627 ohms? If yes, repair or replace transaxle connector No. 2, then go to step  12. If no, go to next step.
  10. Disassemble transaxle. See appropriate OVERHAUL article. Disconnect input/turbine speed sensor connector. Check for poor connection (damaged or pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc.). Are terminals okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair connector and go to step  12.
  11. Measure resistance between input/turbine speed sensor terminals. Is resistance 513-627 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace input/turbine speed sensor and go to next step.
  12. Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors. Clear DTC from memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Drive vehicle at 25 MPH or above with engine speed of 1500 RPM or above for 2 seconds or more. Come to stop and repeat procedure 2 more times. Is same DTC present? If yes, replace TCM. See TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If no, repair is complete.
