Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Has FREEZE FRAME PID DATA been recorded? If yes, go to next step. If no, record FREEZE FRAME PID DATA on repair order, then go to next step.
  2. Check for related service bulletins and/or on-line repair information availability. Is any related repair information available? If no, go to next step. If yes, perform repair or diagnosis according to available repair information. If vehicle is still not repaired, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Using voltmeter, backprobe TCM terminal 1F. Turn ignition key to ON position (engine OFF). Is TCM terminal voltage within 0.2-4.9 volts? If yes, problem may be intermittent. Check all applicable connections. Perform wiggle test on applicable wiring harnesses. Repair as necessary, then go to step  9. If no, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect transaxle connector No. 2 (8-pin). See Figure. Inspect bent terminals. Is there any fault? If yes, repair or replace terminals, then go to step  9. If terminals cannot be repaired, replace harness, then go to step  9. If no, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition key to ON position (engine OFF). Verify if TCM terminal 1F voltage changes to 4.9 volts or above when transaxle connector No. 2 (8-pin) is disconnected. Does TCM terminal voltage change? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  8.
  6. Remove the control valve body cover Disconnect coupler connector (10-pin). Check for poor connection (damaged or pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc.). Are terminals okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair connector terminals, then go to step  9.
  7. Check continuity between following coupler connector (8-pin) terminals (component side) and body ground:
    • Coupler connector terminal "I" and body ground.
    • Coupler connector terminal "J" and body ground.
    Is there any continuity? If yes, replace TFT sensor. See appropriate SERVICING article. Go to step  9. If no, repair or replace coupler connector, then go to step  9.
  8. Turn ignition off. Check continuity between transaxle connector No. 2 (8-pin) terminal "G" (harness side) and body ground. Is there any continuity? If yes, repair or replace harness, then go to next step. If no, go to next step.
  9. Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors. Clear DTC from memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Drive vehicle under following condition for 150 seconds or more:
    • Vehicle speed (VSS PID): 12 MPH.
    Is same DTC present? If yes, replace TCM. See TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If no, repair is complete.
