Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Has FREEZE FRAME PID DATA been recorded? If yes, go to next step. If no, record FREEZE FRAME PID DATA on repair order, then go to next step.
  2. Check for related service bulletins and/or on-line repair information availability. Is any related repair information available? If no, go to next step. If yes, perform repair or diagnosis according to available repair information. If vehicle is still not repaired, go to next step.
  3. Using voltmeter, backprobe TCM connector. Turn ignition key to ON position (engine OFF). Inspect TCM terminal voltages for TR switch. See PIN VOLTAGE TESTS . Do 2 or more terminals show voltage at the same time when shifting gearshift lever from "P" position to "2" range? If yes, go to next step. If no, problem may be intermittent. Check all applicable connections. Perform wiggle test on applicable wiring harnesses. Go to step  8.
  4. Turn ignition key OFF. Disconnect TR switch connector. Inspect for bent terminals or pins using mirror. Are TR switch terminals okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair terminals or replace TR switch. See appropriate SERVICING article. Go to step  8.
  5. Using voltmeter, backprobe TCM connector terminals found at fault in step  3. Turn ignition key to ON position (engine OFF). Does TCM terminal voltage change from battery voltage to zero volts when TR switch connector is disconnected? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  7.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TR switch connector. Inspect TR switch for continuity in positions/ranges failed in step  4. See TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS. Is there continuity between TR switch terminals (component side)? If yes, go to step  8. If no, replace TR switch. See appropriate SERVICING article. Go to  8.
  7. Turn ignition key to ON position (engine OFF). Measure voltage at TR switch harness connector terminals "A", "E", "D", "G", "I", and "F". Is there zero volts at TR switch harness side connector? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair or replace wiring, then go to next step.
  8. Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Turn ignition key to ON position (engine OFF). Drive vehicle in each range ("P", "R", "D", "3" and "2") for 5 seconds or more. Is same DTC present? If yes, replace TCM, then go to next step. See TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If no, go to next step.
  9. Start the engine. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Depress the brake pedal, and move the gearshift lever between "P" and "2" positions, stopping in each individual position for 5 seconds or more. Is there any DTC present? If yes, go to applicable DTC test. If no, repair is complete.
