WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 9 other vehicles, including the 2005 Mazda 6, 2005 Mazda 3, 2004 Mazda 6, 2004 Mazda 3, and 2003 Mazda Protege5. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Depress one-way clutch inner race only enough to remove snap ring. Over-pressing will damage one-way clutch inner race edges.
  1. Remove snap ring, retaining plate, drive and driven plates, dish plate and snap ring.
  2. Compress one-way clutch inner race using Return Spring Compressor (49 B019 011), Attachment A (49 G019 027) and Nut (49 G019 029), or equivalent. Remove snap ring. Remove one-way clutch inner race and piston return spring.
  3. Use maximum air pressure of 14 psi (1.0 kg/cm2 ), for no more than 3 seconds, to remove low/reverse brake.
  4. Check for worn drive (friction) and driven plates. Measure drive plate thickness in 3 places, and calculate average value. Drive plate standard thickness is 0.063" (1.60 mm). Minimum drive plate thickness is .057" (1.45 mm). If drive plate thickness is not within specification, replace the drive plates.
  5. Check snap ring for wear and cracks. Check for deformed spring. Check piston for damage or wear and seal contact area in transaxle case for damage.
